High flow exhaust

Anyone open up their exhaust? I am curious if it would help (More flow) or hinder (less backpressure)?

This is assuming we dont care about fuel economy, but are looking for more power.

We had one with a bad muffler that we installed a high flow unit in. It sounded great, but didnt have the chance to really test it before it sold.

i've run a 2 inch pipe and a turbo muffler on my Midget. sounds good .not sure if it helped the power. but it sounds good. don't put a glasspack on a 3 cylinder motor . it sounds like a kazoo.

You have a midget! Thats awesome. We got a few years yet in before we can import them to Canada.

    When did they start? 95?

96 was the first year . the locar dealer has sold 3 so far and has another on hand.

Mine has a Summit bought glasspack and 2 inch stainless exhaust. Sounds more like a hopped up 4 wheeler than a kazoo. I really needs to complete my headers, and add a carb to see any benifits.

the glasspac that i run is about 12 inchs long. it's on a 1.0 suzuki motor . very loud & when you let off the gas it has a sound like "COPS SUK"

a larger carb should be easy . make an adapter or cut the intake out for a larger carb.
the header is something i'd like to come up with.

The carbs I want to run require a new manifold. 750cc Suzuki motorcycle carbs.

One day I'll get off my fat backside and do it.

less restriction with a free flowing muffler and short tail pipe will help top end, but bog you down off the line. if you run a longer tail pipe after the muffler it will help maintain your torque.

what size of tail after the muffler did you use?

i ran a 2" pipe from the back of the cat to a 2" "turbo" muffler (hi flow but not straight through) than 2" forward to the "smoke stack" right behind the bed which is 3" up and out. it sounds GOOD!! :D

    Stack

Dude, that stack is sooo bitchin'.. I wanted to do that on my toyota diesel project, but then my sister rolled the truck.. sheesh. Anyone want to buy a 2.4 Toyota diesel engine and 4x4 tranny!

Anyways, lovin' the mods on the mini truck exhaust, a turbo muffler eh! Any suggestions for a supercharged Sambar, I'm also hunting for an equation to improve the intake scenario..

i would be careful on these jap motors ther is a chance u could float a valve it is better to have a some back pressure it improves low end tq

back pressure is good for torque, i'll agree with that, but i have yet to see how back pressure, or lack there of, will allow a valve to float. if you have valve springs with the proper seat pressure for the lift, that are in good working order ie. not fatigued from over revving, the amount of pressure in the cylinder will have NO affect on it.

when i was drag racing, i ran mufflers and straight pipes on the same exact motor, no difference either way. a little better top end with less restriction but a loss on my 60ft time due to lack of torque. and vise versa when running a muffler. but the final times through the trap were a wash... too close to call.

in my set up, i have a proper muffler so there is back pressure. i also have at least 6ft of tail pipe which is very helpful in maintaining back pressure and torque.

    cheers

I have a 91 Sub Sambar. Any problems removing the existing muffler and installing a regular muffler? I am concerned about the hot air hoses from the muffler area into the air intake. Is that a concern?

Actually those are needed for winter to keep carb from icing

if you do free flow exhaust make sure you compensate by riching up the mixture i rebuilt a lot of bike enginge because people did'nt.

It may be good to invest in a high quality air/fuel mixture meter. They are pretty cheap now-a-days.

    Good stuff Milt - thanks.

  22. i run a 1.5 inch straight pipe off the factory exhaust manifold to a chambered stainless motorbike muffler (cheap off ebay lol) at the rear. Bit loud at idle but cruising along in 3rd or 4th gear under load it sounds ok. May fit a centre muffler one day

  23. Or read the plugs after 500 k. Put new ones in before or clean the old ones.

I know this is an old post but what temp would fuel freeze in the carb? In Mississippi we will drop to single digits on occasions. I have a 94 sambar and have bought materials to build a snorkel and would like to bypass those warm air values and seal off the air box. Would this also change my air fuel mixture causing me to run rich? If I do this I'm looking to have a muffler/exhaust fabbed to cut these out as well. Looking for something quiet since I use my truck to get around at deer camp. Any suggestions?

Gasoline will freeze anywhere between -120F and -240F depending on the amount of ethanol , however if the ethanol has absorbed water it could freeze at a much higher temperature.
i can tell you that in Mississippi the carb will ice on a 50 degree day when our humidity is high. this happens when the fuel changes state in the carb and causes a temperature drop. any source of warm air will stop this.

I so want a stack like milts, but not through the box like that. the black tailgate on a white truck is getting old.
