so i went out wheeling again 3-21.. been having a good time out there with my better equipped rig... but bad things happen.. the dings in the body don't bother me as much as the bone head move i pulled...

i was turtled pretty bad, couldn't go forward or backwards. i was on a good incline so i set my parking brake. i jumped out, grabbed my tow strap and hooked it to my buddy's rig. he started pulling hard, i was giving it all the little 4 banger had while yelling at the top of my lungs "GO HAMSTERS, GO!!". due to all my screaming to encourage my "little engine that could" i didn't hear the beeping or notice the big red light on the dash that said "BRAKES". with a big loud CLUNK i finally broke free of my imprisonment... while at the same time twisting all my rear brake components around the axles. completely ruined both sides and ripped the brake line off one side and the E-brake cable as well. we had to pinch off the rubber line with vice grips and zip tie those to the trailing upper trailing arm then remove all the brake hardware from the RH side to get it off the trail, then at the trailhead removed all the brake hardware from the LH side to get it home. and it was clunking really bad going around corners so assumed i broke a spider gear...

in this pic you can see how it broke the brake line when it pulled the wheel cylinder around inside the drum
    [IMG]

all the brake parts fell out when we pulled the drum

left side... notice how the whole backing plate has rotated a bit?

but, on the bright side, i am part of a jeep club with a great bunch of members... i scored a complete rear axle - drum to drum - for a case of michelobe ultra ($24). i tore into & having never opened up a diff i was on a quick learning curve. i always carry extra axles with me on the trails but have never had to install them. i got everything ready and prepped and tore into my jeep last nite... i have to say it's a lot easier working on an axle on jack stands than it is underneath.

so here's pix of the carnage that i removed..

who knew a 4 banger had this much potential... :D

other broken spider gear & you can see some of the chunks that came out of there when i was cleaning it.. most went into the drain pan.

take a look at the backing plates... you can see how oblonged the holes are where they mount to the axle tubes from turning right off the bolts...

Holy crap! Bet you don't ever do that again. Who would have thought that that 4 banger could do that much damage. On the bright side though at least you can get the parts you need. Thats exactly why I'm replacing everything on my truck with good ol' parts made in the USA. LOL

    4.88 ring and pinion x 2.6 transfer case x 4.46 first gear = 56.58:1 crawl ratio... that's a lot of leverage :D

When I'm not driving my Hijet around I'm driving my 4wd v6 5speed 4runner. I used to have a 91 4 liter 4wd cherokee limited... but I beat it up too much and it started having reliability issues. Toyotas seem to beable to take more daily abuse. Wranglers are much more capable offroad though, but stock for stock my 4runner can hang with most wranglers... optional rear e-locker diff helps alot there, tires make a huge difference too. Second you put lockers on a wrangler they're gone tho.

rock crawling has turned out to be a lot more perrilous than i ever intended to do with my jeep... it seemed my jeep was rock magnet... the rocks just kept jumping out and biting it... and always in the same spot.

so, after bashing in my rear quarter panel repeatedly i finally decided some 3/16" steel body armour was in order. i didn't like how the old warn sliders matched up with the new gen right rear quarters so i installed the gen right sliders too. the sliders are really importand on the jeep for the trails we ride... mostly waterfalls actually not trails. there are rocks you have to pivot around because the turns are so tight... which means letting the side of the jeep scrape across the rocks... as evident in the pix.

it was a real pain in the butt and doing it all solo it took just over 6 hours. i still have a little more finessing to do, there were a few details i missed. i should have drilled out all the fender flare mounts before i put them on, and i need to caulk up the holes left over from the old sliders.

i noticed when i took off the old warn sliders that even though they weren't bent they dented in the sides of the tub pretty hard..

it was raining pretty good today, but decided to hit the trails anyway and play in some mud... ran two trails succesfully even though the trails were like ice with the rain... we ran upper and lower terminator. good times.

later in the day we ran "collateral damage" that trail easily earned it's name...

just finished up some more work on the HEEP. did a 5" short arm lift on it. already finding flaws in so much lift with such short control arms. only had it on there for about a month (would have posted pix sooner but have been working out bugs before getting stupid) and already blown a bushing out of a control arm...

anyway here are some pix of me checking out the flex on it. i found an abandoned loading dock/ warehouse...

so i got it stretched all the way out to make sure everything was good... and it was. no binding of pan hard bars, bump stops are keeping the wheels from rubbing anywhere and the shocks seem to be the right length.

BTW... everyone calls me "Doc" - like the mad scientist guy from back to the future since i seem to over-engineer everyething. so the missus got me the vanity plates last week.. one trip to the rock and i damn near ripped it off.. gotta try and fix that.

not exactly sure... they are pro-comp 3000 & very similar to the rancho 5000... you can probably look it up on their web site. they are on a 2005 TJ w/ 4.5" lift.

shredded a couple sidewalls on a trail saturday... the missus INSISTED i get new tires :D

picked up a set of 35 x 12.50 x 15's on rims for $550, sold my old junk tires and rims for 300 and the wheel spacers for 100.. so basically i paid 150 for all five tires and rims... here's pix of it on the same ramp checking for clearance....
