New to the forum and got a question. Could a motorcycle engine be swapped in? I mean...with all the wrecks out there...engines are somewaht abundant and a gsxr1000 or zx12 or R1 or hayabusa engine WOULD ROCK! in these. I mean...if you wanted to...could you?

Can you say BMW? The K series engines would be totally fantastic in a small truck like this!

Horizontally-opposed engine from a Goldwing might fit well under the box of a mid-engine mini (Suzuki/Daihatsu/Mitsubishi/Mazda). They're shaft drive.

Only bummer would be not having reverse. :D

Well there you have it... GL1800 swap! :D

The shifter handle would be awesome... just push/pull, like a crashbox.

The Russian made Ural has a reverse gear as well - not so hard to find in the motorcycle world.

Ooooh yeah, the nifty 2WD Urals. Didn't even think of those.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going over to ADVrider.com to brush up on my sweet adventure-touring bikes.

Reviving this older post just because this concept has stayed fresh in my mind. I can't believe one of us in the U.S. or CN hasn't pulled this off yet.
    :pop:
I did some more scouring of the the scattered information that's posted across the net on bike engines fabricated into cars, etc.

I ran across an interesting tidbit about several factory concept vehicles powered by current motorcycle production engines...

    Honda Gold Wing Powered GRX
    [IMG]

When the corporate designers go to work on a motorcycle powered car you get a concept like this, the GRX, utilizing the 1500cc flat six originally used in the Gold Wing. This has been around for a while though Honda doesn’t seem inclined to actually produce it. Nice looking concept, though.

It's interesting how this was talked about with two main advantages:
    • Shaft drive
    • Trans with Reverse

    Suzuki GSX-R/4
    [IMG]

Here’s one that Suzuki put together for the show circuit a couple of years ago, powered by the superb Hayabusa engine. It’s 1400 pounds of sheer fun (sound familiar?), at least it could be but it never went beyond the concept stage. It sits on 20 inch wheels and had all sorts of neat electronic wizardry. They could probably sell a ton of these if they ever produced them and breathless rumors to that effect continue to surface. We’ll see, but don’t count on it.

This is really what I'm leaning towards in a project - a Busa powered Carry (keep it in the Zuki family). A 1300 CarryBusa! :D I am just aching to get a project together like this once the right 2WD project truck comes along. It's been done overseas multiple times and there's really no reason why its not possible - just engineering issues to address and figure out. I would want to tackle a 2WD build before even considering a 4WD option because of the driveline and seriously increased stresses on the front shafts/CV's/etc.
These are just some of the bigger issues discussed:
    • Driveline / Reverse issues / Chain Drive / Ratios (all CAN currently be addressed but looking for economical solution)
    • Oil delivery - dry sump seems best option
    • Obvious fabricating design work but a mini truck seems the perfect vehicle dimensions-wise
Obviously this just scratches the surface of everything that will have to be addressed as a completely custom build. But what a truck-load of fun this would be and would "most-likely" be able to be registered for road use in the U.S. as a bonus falling under the home-built category! :D

Is that even a Rhino? Looks like there are some rhino bits on it but it looks to have a large portion of the chassis to be custom built, if not totally custom built with a rhino front end and suspension.

    Hmmmm.

I don't know. I'm not a fan of the engine between the seats. If you do some youtube seaches you'll find a few modified Rhinos and RZR's with bike engines. Just thought that one was interesting because of the hi/lo xfer case + reverse.

searched around for a good place to toss this question in. Too many small random threads about engine swap to pick a place. This one will do....

Found a brigs and strat 31 hp v-twin 47 lbs-ft torque (replacement part for a bobcat?). looks super small enough to fit and the slant shouldnt be a problem either. Cheep too. 1700 brand new. Not sure how to rig up throttle, and clutch etc.

why would you put a smaller engine in there?? the kei trucks (typically) make 45hp and 45ft/lbs of torque... looks like you just wanna spend some money to me :D

Well if I have a super cheap mini with no engine. Then yes I am looking to spend money... Ugh to get it running. Super cheap engine. Seemed like a viable way to go.

Bit under powerd but torque would b par. Actually I don't own a mini in this config but am considering this as an option.

if you got a mini with no engine, i would contact the site sponsors, a lot of them bring in used engines and trannys.

it's moving right along... the kid is the size of an apple this week (according to jen's book ) and we find out if it's a boy or girl on saturday. she's been sure it's a boy since the beginning... so i'm expecting to have to start painting the room pink with the way murphy's law applies :D

I'm thinking of a motorcycle engine that has a shaft drive and use a Samurai T-case. They are divorced so it should be easier...

Also thinking of doing a similar conversion in a Ruesch side-x-side....

    Thats what Im talking about!!!!

I have 7 Geos, 2 are road worthy, 5 for parts..... Been wanting to do something like that for awhile.

Am waiting on the motor to give out on my convertible daily driver, but at 260,000 miles , its still running strong. I think the original clutch is starting to slip a little though ....

I want to transplant a Harley motor in instead of a crotch-rocket....just because.... and have the drag pipes come and turn out on the side like a vette or cobra....

    Oh yeah ! ;)

Jason - there's a guy who has swapped a Harley engine into a Festiva: http://www.fordfestiva.com/members/Mook/mook.htm

Technologically interesting, but if I were going to swap a bike engine, I wouldn't waste my time with a loud, irritating, hulking V-twin with a poor power output-to-displacement ratio.

I suppose you can guess the country in which my bike was built. :p
