Right now, I've got a rear wheel off of my 1991 Sambar. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to remove the brake drum. Any pointers?

    The front was easy.

Thanks. Now I just have to find a socket big enough.

It takes a 30 mm reg socket and the popular oppinion for the torque to tighten it back up is between 140~150 ft/lbs.

Rural, You should read my post on this - had a weird noise coming from back and it turned out to be nut not tight enough.

I am wondering if the tapered cone that sits right below the nut works a small bit with heavy loads and causes
it to move inwards resulting in play in assembly.

I will be monitoring mine for a while to see, have just bought a torque wrench so I can set then recheck a month or so to see if ok still.

I just got in from the garage where I was standing and bouncing on a socket wrench with a 14" handle. Probably a bit more than 220 ft/lbs at play there. Didn't budge. Waiting for some penetrating oil to do its job.

Mine was so loose that I could just about take it off with my fingers.

Ok, got the nut off. The drum doesn't want to move. It looks splined. Should I be using a gear puller? I'm thinking about a sledge hammer.

Should just wiggle and slide right off:frustration:
    Try some more penetrating oil

So as I struggled I gradually figured out exactly how the brakes worked inside the drum. Then I got to thinking, "If the emergency brake is on, that drum isn't going to come off." Sure enough the brake was on. Released it, heard a clank as the drum moved, and pulled the drum off with my hands.

It happens to the best of us. Glad you finally got it off.

I see alot of posts from u rural about mechanical issuses,is it that bad or are you doing exploritory work? At least you are just up the highway if mine ever needs work lol. Did you ever figure out the circulator?

The mechanical issues are mostly me... Or maybe it would be accurate to say that the mechanical issues are aggravated by me. The park brake is sticking and is weak. There were definitely issues with the fuel or fuel supply. And I've noticed a couple of other things that I'm about to post in another thread. But other than that, the issues have been easy to address, even for me.

I'm really new to vehicle maintenance and repair, but I'm having a lot of fun learning how everything works.

You bought it in Three Hills correct? Did it have 48000 k? They had three Subaru's when i bought mine a 18000 k a 48000 k and a 77000 k I bought the "pretty" one lol. highher milage but straight body and seemed to run the best so far onl heater switch problems high only. Ok off subject wipers as you seem to be getting into all the parts of yours mine move real slow especially cold or at idle is it common?

    Hey guys,

Our new shop is finally complete and we are 'mostly' moved in. It is located west of Three Hills on highway 583, just east of the seed cleaning plant. I haven't announced it yet because I wanted to get some good pictures to post on our website but it has just been too cold. Hopefully over Christmas.

Our hours won't be regular until the start of January but if you see the lights on feel free to stop in. Most likely our licensed mechanic Earl is there. If you want somebody to have a look your wipers confuzed, just bring it by the shop.

I know Three Hills is a bit out of your way Rural but if you ever get tired of 'exploratory work' or you can't get that fuel problem nailed feel free to bring it down. We will make it right.

We also had 10k worth of OEM Suzuki and Subaru parts arrive to increase our growing collection of DD51T and KS4 parts stocked in Alberta. We are also parting out a DD51T and a KS4 as well. The engine out of the DD51T has already been sold but everything else is there.

Our winter projects include a bolt-in KS4 and DD51T composite headlight conversion kit, 2-2.5 inch lift kits as well as front and rear bumpers and tool boxes.

    Address:
    402 2nd St N.W.
    Bay 3
    Three Hills
    Alberta

    Thanks,
    Stan

Yup. That's the truck. I bought it from Stan. Just to be clear, as far as I know the only issue was the fuel. As I get time to delve into the truck a bit more, that may change. And Stan did warn me that the truck was a little funny, so I'm not going to hold it against him. But I wanted a differential lock and thought that the issues were easily corrected.

The only reason I haven't dumped the fuel is because I can't stand dumping fuel, but figured a few tanks of fuel and the problem would work itself out. If I finally dump it and these issues go away... Well, I'll feel pretty dumb.

So my parking brake is off and im in nuetral, not that that should matter. Ive beat on the drum and heated it up and sprayed penetrating all over. Is there a spring adjustment screw i can get to or am i up the creek without some kind of puller. Any help would be appreciated before i build a puller. Thx

Never got the brake drum off. Found some good used ones for 60 bucks here in the states incase i broke mine. I disconnected the brake line and unbolted the brake cylinder thinking that would help but it didn't. So ive had it put back togeather for a week jow and just decided to run it around the block. To my liking yhe brakes had retracted and im up to full speed. Somewhat of a fix but maybe it will help someone else along the way. Pm me if you need the number to some guys here in the states that have a cache of knowledge and parts and full manuals for 25 bucks. Boom sukas, Go Sooners!
