I would say you are in the right ballpark for mpg

Bumpas....I would think that is about the right mpg. I really doubt if any get 50 mpg. ray allen

My 1st check, was only 29mpg's, but I was always running 70+ km's.

The tankful I'm on now, I'm running around 60 or less. I'm guessing if I want really good mileage, I'll have to run 40 to 50 km's. Tho' that's a pretty leisurely pace, and I'll prob'ly get rear-ended!:D

i usually get at least 30MPG on the hiway at speeds of 60mph (100kph) if i really put the screws to it and take a long trip and keep it floored (125-140kph) it will get down to about 25mpg. if i baby it on a trip and run it around 80kph it gets a lot closer to 40MPG

You must have a 5 sp.?

My Carry seems to be geared really low, I could easily pull another gear. Geesh, I pull away in 2nd, but can do it nearly as well in 3rd! In 4th, at 80km's,my engine is screaming! It pulls 4th gear quite easily, I could really use another gear!
Sure wish I had went to bigger tires.

hi it is me again ! replaced all the electrical on my truck but still runs rough. it sounds like the carb, rough only at idle, not a steady skip , revs go up and down. where can i get a carb kit ?I can not get one around here. I had it in the snow for the first time today it pull very well lots of fun cant believe i have not bought one before .

i had a new carb put on today it runs 100% better, can't wait to see if it changes my mpg !

  15. Just figured it around city 29.4 us/mpg, 35 canadian (imperal)/ mpg. With my Hijet 5 spd you have to run it hard so you do not get run over, but it keeps up. All filters new, new synthetic all the way around, new cap rotor, and plugs.

    I can imagine 40-45 Canadian mpg at 80 km/hr

    bummed about my mpg!

my new little '99 subaru sambar only gets like 25 -28 us/mpg hwy. its supercharged 4cyl 660cc. ive only checked whole tanks on hwy @55-60mph. would it get better in town only? i put bigger rims/tires on it to get the revs down but it didnt seem to help much. for such a tiny little thing i'd think it'd get much better. i wonder how much hassel it'd be to change the gears so they're not so low. i also start off in 2nd, (3rd if you count the granny gear). 5th top gear it sounds pretty high revs tho i havent got my tach hooked up yet. what would one change to get the revs down, the differential gears? id rather it rev lower at 60-65mph than have unused low gears. advice? check out my pix in gallery.tom in missoula montana

  17. I think the best bet is drive slower if you want more mpg about 65 - 80 km/h which is too slow for the highway. I do not think you can change the gearing much I know in Diahatsu you cannot 5.88:1 to about a 6.66:1.

If you could gear it higher you would not have the power to use a higher gear unless you had a big tail wind. With the supercharger that may be an exception.

Problem is engine is too small if it was closer to a 1 liter or a tad bigger the mpg would be better. I understand Dihatsu Hijets in the UK had 1 liters and 1.3s.

With "bigger" tires/wheels, how accurate is your "speedo"?

  19. Yep if you figure the difference in tire size as a percent that is how much faster you are actually going.

Example 23 inch tire before, 25 inch tire now. 23/25= 0.92

    2 - 0.92 = 1.08 or 8 percent.

    100 km hour gauge * 1.08 =s 108 km/hour actual

    90 km/hour gauge * 1.08 =s 97.2 km/hour actual

I think I did that right, or is it suppose to be 25/23 = 1.087 (8.7 percent different in mileage). Either way small difference for what we are figuring out.

Yeah, supercharged sambars are one of the more thirsty of the mini-trucks. So it sounds like you are getting the correct fuel economy. I get 27-30mpg in my daihatsu now that it is fully sprayed with bedliner.

You guys need to put some "seafoam" in the engine

    Don't laugh!

Get a can, put 1/3rd in the engine with the oil, 1/3rd in the gas tank, and run the truck while you suirt the last 1/3rd in the carb while you run the engine.
Don't worry, all the white smoke is normal.

Take it for a nice long drive and repost your results.

    You WILL be pleased.

Another convert to the seafoam...it is sad that we are amazed now when products actually do as they claim...I love seafoam too:)

figured out my bigger truck gets about 25 on the highway with a lead foot and slight wind lol.

My last 2 tanks of gas netted me 7.5L/100km or about 37.5miles/imperial gallon. This was all city driving with pretty hard acceleration in the first 3 gears. I imagine that highway should see 10-20% improvement, but, I haven't tried that yet ...

  25. That is pretty good you have a fine running truck. I hate to bust your bubble unless you are going to be driving about 70 km/hour on the highway your mpgs will be about 20% less.

Yeesh, less on the highway ... I guess it makes sense though, I figure at 85km/hr I'll be turning about 4800rpm or so with my new tire/rim combo, I'm running 175/70/13 all season radials on 13x5.5" steel rims which are 22" tall. Well, I have hopes, but, I guess I'll just have to take a drive and find out ...

shift at 4 grand and get into top gear quick and drive it easy and 40mpg is easy (at 80kph tops) on the highway thats a different story at steady 100kph I get about 28-30mpg

I pretty much work my way through the gears shifting at about 4500rpm and get to cruise as fast as possible depending on traffic of course. That's pretty much how I drive the Datsun's too, except I shift at about 4000 rpm ... We'll see about the highway milage when I do it, I'm planning on a parts run down to Seattle soon and I'll probably take the Carry and see how it does on I5.

also constant shifting at same rpm range helps even out your score to.

wish i could get a bit better mpg on the highway though.

Please everyone, use US gallons when quoting mpg. The industry standard is USG since 1978 when we changed over to metric. Imperial gallons are pretty much dead in Canada to quote mpg, it creates to much confusion in the automotive market.

That L/100km stuff is crap too, what's wrong with km/L, that's the way the Japanese do it. We can blame the Ausies/Europeans for that one I think. Bloody government in bed with the auto manufactures, a numbers slight of had if you ask me. I think you can have a much better grasp on how far 15km is to a litre than 15L to 100km...... gibberish.

    NON RANT:

On a side note, if your engine is healthy enough you can usually advance the ign. timing about 2-4 degrees safely to give you a nice little bump in power and better mpg. The idle tends to be a bit more stable as well, especially with AC.
