Come on Exporters and Dealers. You all want to bend over backwards to sell us one of your trucks. Most of your websites tell us how easy they are to work on and how we can get lots of parts from Napa, Autozone, Carquest, etc like filters, plugs and such. I must admit that is a great selling tool for a truck from Japan. BUT.......Where is all this help when we need our part #'s or conversion #'s? Anytime someone is looking for a air filter, oil filter, grade of oil, or plugs they have to rely on another mini truck owner for crossover #'s. I've tried MANY dealers listed on this site and have only been able to reach 1 by phone and that was G&R Imports. They were very helpful. All the others either didn't anwser their phones or even didn't have a phone number listed. Since you guys work with these trucks everyday, why can't you give us THAT list of all the easy parts you claim that we can buy for our trucks at local autoparts stores. When you can luck up and find someone to answer the phone, they want to sell you one of THEIR filters instead of just giving you a crossover number. I've called my dealer in Emporia Va and left several messages in regards to a truck that was purchased from there. I've sent an email asking for a response and still no one has called me back or responded to my emails. Maybe I should tell them I am wanting to PURCHASE another $5000 truck. I love my little truck but almost wish now that I would have bought something else. What good is a truck that it is all but impossible to get any help when we need it. Help and Service from a majority of our exporters and dealers is what is hurting the Japanese Mini Truck market. Don't get me wrong there are a few good exporters and dealers out there but they are few and far bewteen. So Come On Exporters and Dealers and step up to the plate and help us out with those crossover numbers.
Very true post. BUT..... Sometimes doing some 'leg' work yourself may help you learn more about your truck. For example,I discovered that a ball joint from a Justy crossed over when one of my Sambars needed one.These trucks are not rocket science,and I think they will share a platform with another model. Dealers should be a little more willing to source parts though.
I don't mind working on the truck...infact sometimes enjoy it but its frustrating when you take a part off and take it to an autoparts store only to have someone tell you that they can't help you because "Japanese Mini Trucks" are not LISTED on their computers. They won't let me go behind the counter and try to match it up. In the old days, a good parts guy would search trough parts to try and match it up. Now days if it isn't in the computer then they can't help you. I live in a rural area and autoparts stores are not all that plentiful. I'd just like for some of those Exporters and Dealers to publish conversion numbers here that they say they have. It would be nice to go into an Autozone with the conversion numbers they say they have and say I want #XYZ filter and #XYZ plugs instead of a young kid saying "whats it go on".....oh sorry its not in my computer.
I hear you, and although I'm still a wannabe, it's one of the things that's got me concerned. I have a 1989 Yamaha FZR400 (motorcycle) and although it's a "legit" model sold here, it was not sold in great numbers, and it's starting to disappear off everyone's cross-reference listings. I know a lot of cross references only because I've had the bike for so long and done almost everything myself. (If I want a set of sprockets, I have to tell them the front one is from a 2004 Suzuki GSXR600, and the rear one is from a Yamaha RZ350 ...)
Very true. Although I have to say that I have contacted my dealer several times and no question has gone unanswered. And he guarantees parts if you buy a truck from him. Your biggest loss is not being able to rummage around at the parts store. So far I have been lucky. At one point I started making an online colaborative list for all trucks i.e. specs, reference numbers for parts, oil capacities/types etc.. that everyone could contribute to, but it fell by the wayside. -Greg
Auto wreckers are your friend,at least to rummage through so you know what to cross reference with. I am thinking a Japanese mail order bride would be a good investment as well
Great Idea!!!!!!! I think the online colaborative list for all trucks is a GREAT IDEA since it seems once we buy the trucks, most dealers are through with us unless you purchase THEIR oil filter, air filter, etc. Why pay $15.00 plus shipping and wait a week for an oil filter from a dealer when if we knew the conversion number, we could go to Autozone and have it right away for around $5.00
I dont think it is fair to say "most dealers are through" when it sounds to me like you have purchased one truck from one dealer. There is a TON of shared info on this site- part of what makes it great! You make it sound like something is owed to you. I am sorry if you are not happy with your dealer, but dont take it out on most everybody else. I was selling these trucks 6 years ago before most people had even heard of them. Back then, I always made it very clear to the customers that parts may be difficult to obtain and I made no promises. But nowadays things are different. I say most every part is available now. We have some very good parts dealers now and its getting better as time goes by. I am not in the parts business, but refer my customers to companies that are downright helpful and carry a good stock of parts AND they always answer the phone! Mactown, GRimports and others from this site. We sell LOTS of trucks, and these are just a couple of the places I get parts when I need them. And there are ALOT of helpful, knowledgable peeps on this site where all you have to do is ask and you will get multiple replys 99% of the time. And not all are dealers or exporters. There is alot of info out there, and we learning about more 'crossovers' all the time. But I certainly dont have a comprehensive list of all the parts and part numbers-- I wish I did!!! Besides, you say "there are a few good exporters and dealers out there". Just use them! I actually see your point---But it sounds like you are not happy with the service you received from your dealer, and you are assuming most other exporters and dealers are the same way. I dont agree. I am not going to be as nice as the previous posts. You have allot of nerve jumping on here claiming "MANY" dealers on here do not provide you with any service. You were smart enough to figure out how to post a response I am asuming you are smart enough to search the site as well. OK now I will be nice. This is info I have collected off this site. There are no quarantees these will work. Use at your own risk. Batteries NAPA 8223 Interstate Batteries YB30L-B SYB16L-B YB16CL-B Autozone has a 425 AMP lawnmower battery that works great. You have to convert to blade posts and alter your clamp system a bit, but that is too easy. I believe it is about $26. Be sure to take your old battery to avoid the core charge. Oil Filters Oil filter for carry is a wix 51344 Fram 4967 Mitsubishi Wix 51365 or Fram 1365 NAPA 1365 Fram PH6607 interchanges to Wix 51365. Daihatsu Wix 51394 Walmart Super Tech ST7317 More cross reference. The Baldwin filters have a good name as a quality U.S. made filter. The B1400 is the cross over for the standard short filter (length 2 5/8" - M20 X 1.5mm threaded). B1402 will work on some trucks although a bit longer at 3.5" and finally the B1431 is the longest at 4" long. These are direct cross overs for several of the Mitsubishi filters as listed on their web site. Gear/Transmission Oil My Japanese Mitsu owner's manual calls out "SAE 75W/85W (GL-4)" for both the transmission and transfer case. For the differential, SAE 90 above 10 degrees C, SAE 80W below 10 degrees C. it calls for 0.73 qts. of 75w-85 0r 90w depends on temp. Differential-front 0.83qts. 80w-90 rear 1.34qts. 90w. Use 70 weight gear lubes in std. tranny & diffs. Thanks for the replies. I spend allot of time on this site and post when I feel I can contribute. The list is what I have compiled over the past few months. Once again no guarantees with the applications of that list. Kudos actually go out to the people that contribute here. Without those contributions, that list would never have been compiled. I am a distributor/dealer but prefer to keep that on the DL. Both because of the rules of this forum and also because of poster such as this who choses to cast a wide net of disparaging comments across our great community. Milt, I do in fact sell all my trucks with proper registration. Anyone selling trucks without the proper paper work are doing there customers a big dis-service. I am also the one selling trucks in Arizona with clean Arizona Titles. Every, I repeat every customer that has inspected my trucks after looking at others available have said I have the nicest, cleanest trucks. Not trying to drum up any business, I'll leave it at that. I am not trying to hijack here, but.., Milt and Jeff- What do you consider "proper" paperwork? I am asking because I want to keep up with the times, and I am curious what your answer is. I dont want to seem ignorant here, but I probably sold over 300 trucks before I even knew what a Export Cert was! My trucks come with the green sheet, and recently I have been supplying an English translation. And an invoice, of course. Should I be supplying my customers with anything else? It really has only been the last couple of years that the paperwork has become important. And I would LOVE to have titles! Anyone know how to do that in Ca.? Thanks in advance!
If you are providing the green cert and the english version with a bill of sale that is sufficient. Allot of dealers supposedly are selling with only a bill of sale. There is a guy that I was in contact with here in cali that got a green sticker. I think a truck taken into CA DMV with a title from Arizona might be what you are looking for. Just a thought. Jeff
I recently found out SD requires the bill of lading from the container ship as well as the customs paperwork from when it came into the US. It says something like this at the top; "Dept of homeland security US Customs and border protection Entry and Immediate delivery". If you directly import them from Japan you shouldn't have a problem getting either of those forms since there is no middleman, luckily my seller does and he had no problem getting me that paperwork. SD might be the only one that is that strict though.
There are a lot of dealers out there buying a container of trucks from an importer, throwing them out in front of their house and saying whatever they need to say to sell them. We have a customer that has purchased a lot of trucks wholesale from us. While he was doing his research he talked to a lot of importers, and again some of the stuff you hear is just scary. One of the importers he talked to who I'm not going to name but has an affiliated business that is on here told him that on top of the cost of the container he would also have to purchase a 500.00 import bond every time he purchased a container and that there was really no domestic alternative for parts ! You all know that's complete BS, but it's people like this who create disgruntled customers like the guy on here now.
The reason I said MOST dealers is because I searched the list of Dealers and Exporters listed on this site and tried contacting (10) of them plus the dealer where my truck came from. That makes a total of 11 Dealers and Exporters. Out of that 11, I only had ONE that has responded and that was G&R Imports. Actually they answerd the phone. I can understand that maybe the other 10 were too busy to answer the phone but why ask someone to leave a message if they don't return phone calls. Do I think something is owed to me???... Yes I do, I am owed the SAME service after the sale as I got before the sale the same as with anything we buy. Don't you agree???? Don't tell me that I can get most parts from local autoparts stores and then NOT give me the numbers needed to get those parts. I know that most truck owners here are more than willing to help other owners out with part numbers but how many post have you seen here from other owners asking "will that part fit on my truck?". That helpful owner has a 95 Carry but will the same part fit a 92 Carry. He doesn't know because he doesn't have a 92....he has a 94. I don't know because I have a 92 and he has a 94..get my point? I do understand that some of these parts are hard to get, that some of these parts have to be ordered from Japan, that some of these parts have to be gotten from salvage yards...and I'm well aware of that and understood it completely before purchasing my truck. Again.........I'm not talking about ALL dealers and exporters but 1 out of 11 isn't very good odds you think? I salute the other truck owners here that are more than helpful with useful information. Thats who I have had to rely on so far. My whole point was to get those dealers to stand up to the plate with the list of conversion numbers for parts they advertise we can get at local autoparts stores when we buy our trucks.
You hit the nail on the head. "SEARCH THE SITE" You back up exactly what I am saying. Most dealers are not saying "Search the Site" when they are trying to sell you a truck. They say "you can get a lot of parts at your local autoparts store". If those dealers I was talking about would publish their numbers just as you did then this thread would have never been started. You published a great list of items and conversion numbers but will they fit a 90 mits with a 550cc engine? The reason I am targeting the dealers is because they are the ones who deal with these trucks on a day to day basis. They know the differences in models and engines or at least they should if they are selling them. They are the ones who advertise the ease of getting some parts. What we need is a place here that has ALL models and engines listed with a detailed list of filters, plugs, oils, etc for us all to be able to go to when we need info. I mean, isn't this site here to promote Japanese Mini Trucks? You just published a GREAT start. I've done numerous searches for these parts and have never been able to find out for sure if that part will fit on my particular truck. It would be very easy if there was only ONE truck with ONE engine but thats not the case.
not proper paperwork, proper REGISTRATION. jeff has figured out the easy way to title them here in arizona. somehow i missed something when i tried :frustration: but i've got nothing but time. his aren't registered for street use but at least they have a legal title as an ATV. and with that in arizona you can drive it on the road like these guys driving their rhinos and rangers and quads on the street.
DUDE, REALLY? do you still have training wheels on your bike too? come on. i'm not trying to tear you down, and i understand your point about sometimes needing parts that are about as rare as hen's teeth... but maybe you should have done some independent research going into this... i know i did. i realized that I would have to be resourceful, that I would have to figure out a lot of cross #'s myself. that I would have to scrounge the bone yard looking for something that was a close match and modifying it. i've been a mechanic and a fabricator for 20 years and knew i would still be beating my head on the wall from time to time trying to get somethinig for this truck. i spent 15 minutes at autozone trying to find a good spark plug for my truck. I still need to do more research to get better plugs but at least i found something to replace the fouled ones i had. last nite my truck had an issue, i posted on here looking for some trouble shooting (previous experience) tips to save myself some time, once i realized it was a u-joint i pulled it apart. today i have my driver dropping the drive shaft off at the local driveline shop to have it rebuilt... it's a lot of legwork on my part but when it's done i'll have a couple numbers for people to reference for a 99 or similar daihatsu. sorry i won't have them for a 92 carry. but as time goes on, and more and more people do their own legwork and post it we will have the independent resources that YOUR dealer told you about but couldn't support. just make sure you do your part. cheers milt
You say you understand my point...but also ask me about my training wheels??? I think you have missed the whole point of my post. Why wouldn't you want better service from a dealer? Why would you want 10 out of 11 dealers or exporters not to return your calls or answer your emails? The WHOLE point of this thread was to get the dealers and exporters to step up to the plate when we have issues after the sale... Is that such a bad thing afterall? I did research before buying my truck and as you should know, when a salesman is trying to sell you a 5 or 6 grand truck they will call you back...very quickly too I might add... and they the tell you all the good points of owning their particular truck. I understand that because I have done sales too... But it is usually the service AFTER the sale that keeps a customer happy and brings that customer back plus any of his friends that are in the market for that item. If you happen to be a dealer and I stepped on your toes then I am sorry. I am ONLY talking about the ones that are not stepping up to the plate with issues. Not answering emails, or Not returning phone calls. These little trucks are neat...I love the way it drives, rides, etc.. I don't mind looking and searching for hard to find parts from salvage yards that will fit my truck. It is the little things like filters, plugs, etc, that can't be used from salvage yards that I was talking about. Soooo what is so wrong with asking these dealers to step up to the plate with issues????.. Wouldn't you want John Deere to step up to the plate if you had bought a Gator?

i bought my truck from a private party, i don't know anything about what dealers offer as far as parts, cross over or anything like that. i wasn't trying to be hostile, just trying to point out that you gotta expect difficulties in working with any grey market vehicle. i guess since i've been through this before i was more expectant of the problems in sourcing parts than most people, and since i bought from a private party i had no false hopes or aspirations.... sorry if i pissed you off that wasn't my intention, just trying to stress that if everyone continues to post what they find eventually we'll build a great database and it won't even be an issue. cheers milt
And you have to expect delays/difficulties when getting anything for these little buggers.If it was easy,everyone would be doing it.These trucks are like projects,and we all know how well some projects drag on Try restoring a very old vehicle---heck maybe Japan has some parts for those too
I will say this I have learned a lot form this board and will enjoy the Hi Jet I purchased last week as an addition to other vehicles on our farm. However I have sent a dozen requests for information and pricing on tires to several of the listed dealers and others and one has gotten back to me with information. I don't know about anyone else but when someone contacts me wanting to buy something I sell I get right back with them! I have been looking at the ACT and the 489XT which are both mainstream tires so I don't think that is it I guess they have enough business without mine.

No worries here...I wasn't pissed off at you.. I was just feeling that my point was not getting through. A database for each model sounds like an excellent idea. It would be a very useful resource to us all and especially to the people out there now that are new to Japanese Mini Truck like myself. That would be a much better way than the bits and pieces we get when we all do searches not knowing what year models/engines share the same parts. As far as I know there are only a handful of different brand trucks and only two engine sizes. How do we go about building this useful resource???.. I'm game to list every part I buy plus part numbers for my particular model once we get this database established or even sooner if someone needs them. Of course so far, I've only bought oil, oil filter, steering bushings, and a radiator hose but I've spent countless hours getting these few parts. Just let me know if and how I can help...Thanks
Brand Reference Section There already is a reference section for each brand right now. Kevin "new and improved" it just last week. Subaru has the most reference's due to yours truly but Iv'e posted Suki stuff as well. It's all there for the reading
