Trans: 4 or 5 speed

My 92 carry has the 4 hi/low with front axel lock and rear diff lock. I've only found four forward gears. Did these vehicles come with either a 4 or 5 speed trans? Am I missing a gear?

I have not found anything in the book that shows any identifing marks on the trans or if there are different ones available.

    Thanks

I think that it's more likely to be a 4spd than a 5spd, during my search for a truck I found lots of 4spd's [We in Canada can only get 15 yrs or older] and for these years they made 4spd in the Carry but can't confirm if they had 5 spd's as well. Minibrutes seems pretty up on his specs maybe pm him to see if 5spd available in '92. My Sambar is a 5spd and 5th is to the right and up, so I'm thinking if you did have a 5th it must be over to the right and either up or down. You must push to overcome extra spring [sideways] before going up in mine. Hope this info helps.

Thanks Timetripper, After I tuned it up and took it for a spin I ran it though the gears and ended up with only 4. I went up and to the right and nothing there so I'm assuming it's a 4 speed. I never asked when I bought it and never tried till this weekend as I was just tooling around on the farm never over 2nd gear.

That's ok with me. I was just curious if the trans had any markings on it that would indicate 4 or 5 speed.

Anxiously waiting for Nov to put some plates on it and be legal on the road.:D

i have a 91 with 4 speed and 4h and 4L, it consumes much gas at 4 speed so i bought a 5 speed tranny but the difference now is that it only has 4H. 91 models usually has 4 speed trannies.

    hi/lo or 5 speed

    Hey there,

I have a 90 zuki with the 5 speed plus granny. It seems you either get a 4 speed with hi/lo or a 5 speed plus granny. I have never heard of a 5 speed with hi/lo.
I seem to recall a thread prefering the 4 with hi/lo over the 5 plus granny but I have had no problems with the 5 speed and don't know why the hi/lo would be better. Ignoance is bliss!

Thanks all. I'm happy with what I have and will see how it does on the road.

I was peering in the window of a 96 Carry yesterday and saw that the 5 speed shifter also had a position to the left of the 1st to 2nd gear leg of the pattern. It was marked "EL", I think; it was hard to make out. Is that the granny you are referring to?~Andy

    EL= Extra Low

Honda Attack has UL = Ultra Low which is even lower plus it has UR = Ultra Reverse

In my opinion the Honda Attack has the widest gearing of any Kei truck, it might not
be the best 4x4 [not my point] but it is the only brand to incorporate the gearing of
    a Hi/Low with a overdrive for highway.

if you guys had a choice between same truck with a 4 or 5 speed what would you pick and why? (lots in town are 4 speed and i don't know if that is what i would want)

i bought a 5 speed on purpose, the 4 speeds were alright on the dirt but were breathing pretty hard on the hiway... i would rather have another gear that i don't need than need another gear i don't have ;)

Thanks! The Suzuki I was looking at was the truck that the local "dealer" is keeping for himself. I got to drive it and it was sweet, but a little cramped. I have a 99 or newer with the extra leg room on order. Six weeks or so till it arrives.~Andy

Are these transmissions "the usual" for rear drive vehicles in which 5th (if equipped) is an overdrive and 4th (no matter 4-speed or 5-speed) is direct? Same axle ratios on all?

If that's the case then this wannabe will be insisting on a 5-speed, because the one I drove on the weekend was really screaming in 4th at highway speed. I don't need rock crawling capability.

Doesn't answer the question as it pertains to a Suzuki, though ...

The Sambar and Acty don't have the "traditional" 1:1 4th gear ratio because those are transverse-engine transaxles. The input shaft is separate from the output shaft and not concentric, so you can't lock them together even if you tried. On rear-drive gearboxes, MOST of the time (but not always!), 4th just locks the input and output shafts together.

    Late model Honda Acty: 5spd 6.23 3spd auto 5.75 // 5 spd ratios: 1-5,R 4.545/2.500/1.680/1.133/0.861/4.300

i believe that in a 4 speed the ratios are the same, just no 5th.

don't worry about 4th gear, 5th gear is a true overdrive. i have driven 4 speeds that sound like they have nothing left at 90kmh, but with a little persistence they will do 100-110kmh.

Hey Aldee, what did it take to switch it over the the 5 speed, also did you get the 5 speed with extra low? I'm guessing you would have to switch out the shifter assesmbly and maybe the driveshaft?

The 5spd with high/ low is very hard to find, but any of them are interchangeable as long as you stay DB, DD ect otherwise they might vary slightly... You don't need a different gear shifter and the H/L 4wd shifter would probably work with a single range 5spd.. The shift gates are basically determined by the shift cables/ levers and the transmission itself. The shifter itself has no gates and with it disconnected from the trans, you would see what I mean
