Cool site here. I just got me self a 1994 Hijet pick up truck for 100 bucks! Im working on it right now. I need to get a carb rebuild kit cause the truck sat for a while and the gas gummed up. I just printed the Fuel system book from this site and I have to say it is awsome(hope I spelled it right). Anyway the truck is 2 wheel drive with a dump bed. I was wondering if you can convert it to 4x4? it has 4 speeds L and 1,2,3 and reverse. I can not picture how the 4x4 truck works as the radiator seems to be were the front diff would be. I also need the tail gate as this one is missing. Anyone know of were I can get a good cheap one( I know impossible dream) Thanks Ed.

Wow. Sounds like a great deal. Wish I could find one like that around here...even with 2 wheel drive. Best of luck!

Take the carb apart and give it a good cleaning . If your gentle with it you can reuse the gasket on top since its the only one that will be a real problem . I had to do this on my 94 Jumbo when I let it sit too long .
As for 4WD you'll be happy with a good set of tires and a locker in the rear with just the 2wd for some time . I looked at putting 4WD in my 2wd but it was too much work and I liked the "parts" truck more then the Jumbo .
The other thing is pull the C clip out of the transfer case so when you get that thing running you can go faster then 25MPH ;)

That sounds like a sweet deal. Good luck with the carb.

Great Deal on the truck. I am sure you will have a great time fixing it up :).

On a side note we will have a back tailgate for that truck and possibly everything else you may need along your journey.

Good luck!!! Let us know how it turns out.

Yamaha carb. cleaner. Works great. The best on the market. Yamaha developed this stuff about 15 yrs. for the bikes that were sitting in the warehouses across the country.
You can get it at any Yamaha dealership.

Welcome! Congrats on finding that truck so cheap... speaking from my experience with fullsize 4x4 trucks I'd say steer the hell clear of trying to do that conversion yourself. There's just too much that goes into it, too many things to screw up too easily and in the end you'll probably spend more money (and invest more time) than you would locating and purchasing a truck that came 4x4 from the factory. I'd say drive it as is until you find a reasonably priced 4x4, then take the dump bed and swap it over!

ya that dump bed is worth way more the the $100 and the hassle to change it over. heck then you would get your rear tail gate to! could even sell that old non dumping box for half the price of your new truck probably.

Just fill it with gear oil then remove the front diff shaft? May hVe to plug the front of the transfercase as well.

Yea I want to remove the diff completely and axles but by the looks of it I might need differnt hubs to be able to do so ?

No need for new hubs & axles when you already have all you need. Disassemble the outer U joints and use the stub shaft with the leftover part of the joint spinning in air.

That sounds more like what I’m talking about
Now how would one go about taking the u joints apart I thought they were pressed or sealed ?

You press them out. Some u joints need burned out first not sure if these do.

Mmmm ok I’ll have to look into it more but that’s what I was thinkn originally rather than having to change the whole front end
Also with the gearbox will I need to cover it up I wasn’t sure if they leak out the transfer case where the drive shaft goes in or not as I know the gearbox to rear diff will Leak but I was unsure on the front one
I’m just trying to get all things in line so when I go to do it I don’t have any issues and I can smash it out in a day or two due to it being my daily is all lol

Not familiar with your vehicle so don't know how yours is configured but if the front driveshaft U joint is flange mounted to the transfer case output shaft, you should merely unbolt it and leave the flange open. If yours has the U joint integral with the output shaft, disassemble the U joint and leave the U along with the output shaft as is. If the output shaft is a sliding splines, you may need to fabricate some type of retainer to keep it from sliding off during use. As long as you don't shift it into 4wd it should just sit there and seal as it does with a driveshaft hooked up to it. If you take apart the outer joints from the two front shafts and take apart the front driveline, you should be free to drop the differential (and any controls) as it will only be deadweight.

That was the plan so loose everything
So the only issue I have will be the front cvs that go into the hub side of the wheel not the diff
So I assumed they were like a one piece joint thingo I was just going to cut them off but I didn’t want to ruin it in the process
The cvs hub side has a spline that locks into the hub by the looks of it

Seems to me that you are overthinking this - all the pieces we have been discussing are wear parts and are designed to be replaced as they wear out so they can be disassembled in some way. Look at each part & consider if it is required to be there for 2wd operation and if it is used to transmit power in 4wd then delete it. Leave in place whatever parts are needed to seal (the t case output shaft) or to rotate and (the stub axles through the hubs) support the vehicle. The rest is excess for what you are trying to accomplish.

I am a firm believer in the KISS (keep It Simple Stupid) principle.
