Hi, New member to the forum, what a great site for info and discussion! About 1 year ago I purchased a 1997 Hi Jet,S110p,4WD,5 spd. (picture attached). Love the truck but it is not equipped with a hi/lo transfer case. It is used on a farm and I now think lower gearing would be a better setup. It seems that I have two choices: 1) Sell my truck and buy one with either a 4 of 5 speed transmission and hi/lo transfer case or automatic transmission or 2) convert my truck over to one of the above. I'm leaning toward an automatic transmission but have talked to a few people and read that automatics are not very reliable and spare parts (if needed) are very hard to get. Any advise or comments would be appreciated. Do they manufacture trucks with both hi/lo transfer cases and automatic transmissions? Thanks
i thought all the 4wd models came with HI/LOW in the daihatsu? only the 2wd don't have the selector, right? there should be a lever next to your emergency brake handle that changes from 4WD high to 4WD low? mine also has a switch on the dash to go from 2WD to 4WD. i'm sure someone out here knows more than i do and can be a little more helpful.
I have a Mitsu so I can't help on the Hijet question. I will tell you that my local dealer refuses to carry automatics any more due to the fact that he has had problems with each one that came through. And yes, he also claims that parts are hard to find. He had to wait nine months to have a part delivered from Japan before being able to get one to run.
Automatic Transmission Thanks for the quick reply. Like your truck mine also has a pushbutton on the dash to engage & disengage the 4WD. However the only lever on the center console is the parking brake. Thanks
Thanks thats the kind of info that I'm looking for. I read some quotes that automatics are hard to find, a dealer that I am communicating with here in the U.S. has nine (9) of them listed for sale. Thanks
Thats an interesting combination since it seems a two wheel drive truck would probably be purchased origionally in Japan for highway use more than off road use where a hi/low case would be an advantage. Thanks
automatic speed limiters So I read some where at one time that autos were not able to be imported because of the speed limiter thing, So how are they meeting that requirement? They must be cause they are all over the place! Also are the newer models more reliable as far as automatics go?
