I'm curious if anyone has mounted an external oil cooler on their sambar and if so whereabouts did you find was an adequate spot to put it? I was thinking just behind the fan towards the front of the bed, thoughts? Just looking to see where would be a good place to mount it as I plan to mount an external cooler as I do a lot of major highway driving (100km/h or more for long periods of time) and looking to keep the temps down as much as possible.
Right in front of the rear axle cross member to the side of the front driveshaft maybe? Would be a short run and probably lots of air flow under the bed for it. Is this for the motor or trans? Off the top of my head I can't remember there being a spot to splice in an oil cooler for the motor.
I noticed on mine there are some threaded holes around that area like something is suppose to be there but missing, I couldn't find if they were meant for anything or not, or maybe they are for some sort of accessory. That spot does look promising, it would basically be a straight shot like you mentioned from the filter to the cooler. This is for the motor, I was just planning on using a thermostatic plate between the block and filter.
Mine has some rubber guards that go across the front of the cross member and block off the motor some there. Sounds like that's what your missing. Not sure how much they actually do. Well I do have the one behind the fuel tank, guess i'm missing that other half, doesn't appear to be very essential tho.
My AC condenser sits on the other side of the frame rail closest to the overflow resevoir. Did you ever end up mounting your oil cooler rkrenicki? I saw your thread on the subi forums awhile ago and noticed you had purchased a g-plus.
I ended up going with an OEM oil cooler, which is normally used on Supercharged ECVT Sambars. It plumbs in to the normal cooling system. It is a fairly big job to do it the "right way", as it requires a change out of the thermostat housing and one of the metal pipes that go up to the radiator. The parts are also only available for Supercharged models, since the carbed models use smaller coolant pipes and hoses.
For a complete OEM setup, you would need all of the following parts: Cooler assembly: 21311KA004 Oil Filter Stud: 21317KA001 Pipe, Oil Cooler: 21328KA041 Hose, lower A: 807609031 Hose, lower B: 807609012 Hose, upper A: 45161TC400 Hose, upper B: 807609011 Clamp, Hose: 092315002 (x8) Pipe, Engine to Radiator Pipe (Supercharged only): 45171TA620 Housing, Thermostat (Supercharged only): 11055KA172 **DISCONTINUED** The Thermostat housing is discontinued, so you would need to try to find a used one from a Supercharged ECVT vehicle. This is far easier said than done. All of the other parts are available brand new, and I bought them all from JapanParts.com. If you want just the heat exchanger, then you need the first two part numbers. You would then need to figure out how to plumb in coolant in some way.
These are great reference pics and part numbers. I think I will look at making my own air cooled set up. This will allow my coolant system to stay the way it is. Wait, is the cooler actually a coolant to oil heat exchanger right at the oil filter? If that is the case then yes I would need to run coolant. I thought that was just oil in and out pipes.
Correct, it is a common design used on many Subarus. Both my Legacy and my Forester have larger versions of this same exchanger. It is a stack of heat exchanging plates with coolant passages running throughout. I suppose you could use some small coolant loop, separate from the vehicles coolant system... perhaps a generic heater core and a small DC fluid pump to circulate a coolant fluid.
I called my local dealer and as I suspected those numbers are no good, at least for here. Might just bite the bullet and get some parts from japan. Would be a good winter project.
Ah yes, none of those parts are available at US dealers.. except perhaps the hose clamps. I would suggest ordering from JapanParts via email, or Amayama who has a slightly higher price, but easier ordering process.
I just sent an inquiry to JapanParts about a part for my 1995 Diahatsu HiJet S110P, and they replied simply that they don’t help with parts for cars over 20 years old. Which is odd because I’ve heard so many people finding success with them on this site. Any idea why they would say that?
Are you asking them for parts by description, or by part number? Perhaps they may not have the ability to look up older parts. I have the Subaru Electronic Parts Catalog, and I look up the part numbers myself. I just email the list of part numbers I am looking for, and they tell me what is still available or not.
