same here... had the 3-2 set up & did away with all that junk. the rhino carb is a "needle style" choke. if you left that hole where the choke goes open? its not gonna run.
Been messing with it more all morning and verified the timing on the truck and as well as spark and fuel, truck will start if I spray gas or either directly into the manifold. However the cheapo carb I got off of amazon will not spray fuel. I do have the choke cable hooked up but when I manually pump the "needle" nothing sprays. So I took it apart and cleaned the pilots and mains and blew everything out. Im thinking I might have been one of the guys that got a defective crappy Chinese carb.
Carbs do not typically “spray” fuel except a tiny amount through the accelerator pump circuit. They utilize a pressure differential in a Venturi to atomize the fuel. You should almost never see gas spraying in a carb.
Both of the 2 stock carbs I have off of the truck will spray gas when the throttle actuator is cycled.
The Rihno does not I had a HD China crap and the pilot jet was not even drilled! Seriously go to a Mikuni! Mine has a accel pump! I am running a 40mm pumper and have a 33 mm as well!
I had to many problems with the mount of the carb and the carb running too lean that I bought new vacum lines and toss the OEM carb back on.
This was a great thread. I am thinking of doing the Rhino carb swap and was just wondering how you guys were still doing with the carb swap, what other issues you may have experienced lately (if any), and what other fixes you came up with?
I went with the Mikuni! I love it! Didn't have to change cable or anything! Did away with all the Vacum BS! This thing really woke that little motor UP! 40mm Pumper from a 06 Suzuki DR 650!
Thanks KC. what else do I need to do an install of this type of carb? I think you said previously that it needed an HD (Harley?) mount? Where did you obtain that and does it have a vacuum port on it (will I need a vacuum port?) ?
Mikuni HD patern flange or carb boot came separately But would have been the same that came on the Suyzuki DR650 I did raise the pilot and main jets And did a snowmobile choke cable as they have a 2 step on and half choke!
KC, If you ever had the time to put together a detailed thread, maybe even a You tube video, on the Subject, you could really help a lot of people out, with as many details as possible! I know that it's time consuming, but I think it'd be worth it, and very much appreciated! Limestone
I have pics of it all and in a couple of weeks my Bro will be here and will ask his help in uploading them! But I have more than just a carb! I made a header and have a 2" exhaust!
KC, Man, that sounds great!!! Were all looking fore ward to it! Details, are greatly appreciated! This will be a thread to refer to for a long time! Limestone
KCCats will have a really good thread when he posts it. like a newer, more modern alternative to what i started with. thats what its all about. more options, newer ways to tackle this old problem. now something else KC said is really true with this carb swap: opening up that exhaust made a HUGE difference with the carb on my truck. air in===== air out!! thats a big plus.
This is an old thread, but curious if you had a full detail on your carb swap? I’m debating on the Harley carb or your carb set up. Just trying to make it an easy transition as I use by buggy everyday. Thanks
Stay away from all those junk carbs! Get an OEM mikuni flange and carb! Mine came off a Suzuki DR650!
Thanks everyone for your input on this thread and obviously needed solution to a lot of our problems. I am fed up with the vacuum mess and the ebay carb on my Carry I just bought that doesnt want to work no matter what I do! KC, I am leaning towards going your route and any additional information you could post would be MUCH APPRECIATED by myself and I am sure a ton of others on here. Looking forward to it! Thanks in advance!
Ok so I’m not sure how to properly post, vs reply on here but I searched this forum for hours read every entry and never could find a solution or post that said hey this is what works to a t! I tried the cheap cv China carb, ran terrible, I’m pretty inclined when it comes to carbs I feel, but no matter what I did never could get it right! Would idle start great but top end was lacking. I figured maybe the cheap Chinese carb was the culprit? So I bought a brand new Harley factory carb, went through all sorts of jet combos. Still same thing. Just was not right! I finally got fed up, figured I had nothing to loose at this pout as I had already gotten rid of every vac line associated with the carb as well as the coolant lines! What I ended up doing is, I ripped everything off the factory carb down to the bare essentials! Cleaned it, as it is now very simple carb and weighs about 3 lbs less than with all the vac lines, diaphragms, springs gears ect. Only hose I’ve got on the intake is vac advance. To my surprise it’s back running like new! No adapters! No jetting hassles. In 30 degree weather 2 pumps of the gas and were fired up and running down the road! Hope this helps anyone else as I never had anyone try this approach.
KC, I actually ordered a used factory Mikuni (NOT chinese) and the factory intake flange for the DR650. I guess we were all hoping for the details like what jets you used, maybe a link or detailed info on the choke cable and any pics would be awesome! I am also thinking of building a better and slightly bigger exhaust and possibly a header as well. My only real question is did you keep any of the factory vacuum lines, specifically the vacuum advance and if so, where did you source it from? The intake manifold or ??? Thanks in advance for all the work you have already done to pave the way for us! I am looking forward to getting mine running properly so I can finally drive it and use it on my property!
Not to answer for him but as far as jetting you’ll likely end up somewhere around 40-45 on pilot and 160-170 on main. Obviously lots of variables affect that but anywhere in there should result in a usable truck even if it needs tweaked a bit. I’m running vacuum advance on manifold vacuum with no issues. Whatever you figure out on the choke having the ability to lock it on is a key feature.
Bowe, thanks for the quick reply! I think I am going to get my carb in hand, clean it and identify the current jets and go from there. Easy enough to install and see how it runs and adjust accordingly. I also need to see the carb in person and measure for the choke cable and identify the style I will need, straight, 90 degree etc. I will get some photos up once I get everything here and put it together.
