Many have been titled through Vermont. I know of at least 5 around me that were. I sent paperwork to them for my JDM Jimny a week or so ago but don't expect it back for a couple weeks if I got everything on the forms right..

You should not have to send in your export certificate. Just fill it out that a buddy sold it to you for the retail value of the vehicle and they shouldn't question it.. Send a check so in case for some reason they won't your not stuck with a money order

If you do, use plate type Antique 03 code to save $53

I got my Vermont plates today for my Jimny, which is a Kei class vehicle. I did not send any import paperwork in at all, so I have ALL of the original documentation as well..

I did cheat a little on mine and put Samurai/ Jimny as the model and used NADA for a JA Samurai but, you could put anything you want really. If it's enough or you provide a value for what it is aside from NADA like other local listings and the tax money is good enough, send it.

Wow great. I'm looking at the forms and instructions now.
So you're saying mail the check with registration and Bill of sale form?
No title ?, I guess since it doesn't exist yet.
There is a form for Vin. verification ,for out of state, foreign country ... vehicles

But I guess you had the correct amount on that check.... ?

Wonder if I should put Jimney/samurai or DD51t / truck.

Are you planning to register in N.Y. or keep the Vermont plates?

    Thanks for the info.

I skirted it by calling it a Samurai/ Jimny as a Samurai and a Jimny are the same on the outside and used the NADA value for a Samurai and I put the sale price a little higher than NADA on purpose.. However if the tax money is good enough, they will just process it I'm sure.. You could cheat as well, call it a 4x4 in the type, and put SAM as the vehicle model. The vin will match your truck but it will come up as a SAM on the title.

And yeah, All I did was send a check in for the right amount ( tax at 6% + $23 antique reg fee ), the VD119 form and the bill of sale and odometer statements that were required.. Filled out as someone else sold it to me.
IF you want to guarantee everything and put it down as a Carry, you can have your vin verified by a trooper or state official as long as it's sent in with identifying letterhead stating they are NYS officials, and we all know at least one police officer. then you can send it in as a DD51T Carry without question.. But you probably can do without the Vin verification and call it a Carry just the same. As long as there's enough tax money in it for them.

I will end up putting it through to NYS. I probably would have tried in the first place except Covid happened. I spent a lot on the registration though so I might leave the VT plates for a while.. Tons of cars in my area have VT plates due to Title Services being the next town over from me, and they own a LOT of cars as well

Hey matt167, what year is the Jimny, I spoke with the George guy from http://www.titleservice.us/ and he had concern that a 2006 might be more difficult to get licensed. upload_2020-4-13_9-33-14.png
Also see the picture attached from the website on everything required for used vehicle title. How did you get around the registation certificate requirement? Also your statement on vin verification and doing it without vin verification, when is it not required? I personally don't know any of the cops around where I live. Sorry for all the confusion and questions, I'm really wanting to get this dang thing licensed.

Has to be 25 years old to be legal in USA.. I just sent in the vd119 and the bill of sale and all was well. I saw that requirement but decided to try it anyway and it worked.. being only 14 years old. You will be SOL.

Crap say it ain't so....i wonder how there are so many newer ones running around then?

If it's older than 25yr, it can just be a "car" theoretically (caveats covered above, and if first registration my understanding is that the import certificate has to show it hit US soil more than 25 years to the day after date of manufacture - just trying to register after 25 years I don't think is good enough)
If it's newer than that, it has to be registered as a Low Speed Vehicle or Kei Truck law, which vary from state to state.

Exactly. Trucks newer on highways are using actual mini truck laws or are black market

And, I'm actally pretty sure that they put that language in their site/ rules for newer vehicles than 25 years old. Since there are some vehicles that comply with EPA/ DOT ratings, or people have them converted to comply.. But 15 years or older as a rule with VT can be transferred by bill of sale only... It says " Previously Titled " which in Vermont is only 15 years or newer. If it's older than 25 years ( and ALL legal imports will be ) then it's bill of sale and VD119+ some money

Since NY DMV is totally shut off right now, I'm contemplating sending in paperwork for my '85 Corvette so I can drive it. Where I would just send the VD119, Odometer verification and some money I don't need to send in the previous owners NY title and all will be well.

Yea, I don't think Nebraska cares on the 25 year thing, there is a bunch of people with new and newer ones around, but didn't know if Vermont did care. I also noticed it said the odometer disclosure isn't required for 2011 and older but probably good to do just to reassure them. Also did you get a title or just plates and registration? I had thought you could get plates and reg without vin inspection but needed the vin inspection for title. Sorry all seems to be more complicated then it needs to be.

Crap also did you have to send in proof of insurance, last question of the day i hope :).

Nebraska, they have a mini truck law which allows their use. Just not highways https://dmv.nebraska.gov/dvr/title/minitruck.. So unless you care about running a highway you don't have to stick to 25 or older in Nebraska. You just can't go cross country either.

Vermont gives you a plate ( single if Antique plates, both if regular plates I think ) and a registration which has a place for transfer likely for out of state purposes on vehicles older than 15 years... The odometer disclosure is tied in with the Vermont bill of sale. You don't need it, you can send in some chicken scratch on a sticky note and they will take it.. I opted to fill them both out, just cause.. Vermont is THE state for obtaining titles to lost title vehicles

And no, you don't need proof of insurance, although Vermont does require it they don't look for it till you get into a fender bender. Just stick insurance on it before you drive it. Whatever the minimum is in your state is fine. Vermont's minimums are pretty low

Also did you put the short VIN or add zeros or x's to make it 17 characters long? A guy from the mini truck facebook group got denied last month

NYS titled mine with the short serial number, from a NH transferable registration.

adding zeros won't make it into a true VIN. year and manufacturer won't match, check digit won't check. Not sure if that matters when padding a number or not...

I'm going to go ahead and try it with the short vin and see how it goes

N.Y. DMV told me to go with the short vin.
Then told me to bring it back ...
Are you trying a truck? Or as a samurai?

I'm thinking the sAme but still not sure to do a carry or Samurai after you post showing the rejection letter.

    Thanks

Looks like he tried to register it as a " Mini Truck".. Remember that these are federally exempt motor vehicles, NOT " Mini Trucks ". You tell a DMV they are a " Mini Truck " and the DMV's reject them because they have old laws against them when they were imported as used farm equipment.. Being as long as your truck is 25 years old or older ( and imported as a federally exempt motor vehicle ), and you call the truck just what it is, which is Suzuki Carry, Daihatsu Hijet, Sambar, Mini Cab, Acty or whatever it actually may be.. Don't try to register it as a truck only a 2 seat passanger vehicle

The mini truck laws are a grey area, as some states had laws to license them well before they were 25 years old. Always some form of low speed vehicle or limited road use, to the point that sneaky people used to get them through illegal states and then laws were written against them ( which is where the Vermont law comes from ).. BUT, imported as an exempt motor vehicle, it complies with DOT/FMVSS and EPA regulations through exemption.. And since Vermont follows FMVSS and EPA regulations then it's actually legal.

I did not add extra characters, and I've got everything from them

Well i wasn't expecting anything but got my VT plates. Then a valid sticker to go on the rear plate and the form I sent for the registration.
I did redo the first from from truck to car.
For model I put dd51t/CAR (short for Carry).
For the seller I put the exporter and their e-mail. But my address in U.S.
Hope the local law don't give me trouble.
I guess the virus could be used as a reason to be stranded in New York. I think anyone from N.Y. is expected to be quarantined for 2 weeks. Driving with bandito bandana might help...
Good luck and please be safe.

Hey, Everybody, been awhile since I've been on here. Still have my Suzuki Carry 1993 DD51T, no plates, no insurance,
just sets here in my garage, nothing from NYS DMV, haven't heard anything about the law suite that was filed. Did try VT, filled out all the paper work, sent it to them Aug 6th, they cashed my cashiers check on Sept 5, haven't heard from them yet, still hoping that my plates will come and not a rejection letter with their check. This was the most Costly mistake, that I have ever made, I will never do this again. period, waste of time, waste of money, Dumb Dumb Dumb.

If they cashed your check, then you have plates somewhere. They would have sent the un cashed check back if they rejected it.. Give them a call during business hours and see if they got lost in the mail. From my understanding they are actually very nice, unlike NYS DMV

The reason VT has gotten so bad with not wanting to do mini trucks is some duffus from another state pissed them off by calling every other day bitching and moaning to them about it taking too long ( started at like a week after sending in their paperwork )
You call them and your done , they flag the vin

  24. matt167

    matt167 Active Member

Pretty sure that's not the case. If they cashed his check, his paperwork has already been processed. He just has to find out where it is to make sure it was not lost in the mail. They will have record of the transaction... The dates he gave does not make sense so he might have to wait a little longer. It did take 2 weeks to get my plates, and a week and a half later, the transferrable registration came. They come from 2 different places which is something to note. The process can take 4-6 weeks in total, depending

I do have a question, about the inspection, being from out of state, and looking for information on their web page, it says you have to have an inspection sticker on your vehicle, someo or there have said no, well, I’m not going to Vermont for an inspection, shall wait and see what happens. Good day all
