Hey all! New member here. Proud owner (for 2 wks) of a 1999 Suzuki Carry. I’m sure I’m going to have lots of questions to ask. But for now, what size of winch should I be looking at if I decide to get a winch for this truck? BTW I did a search and couldn’t find much info on it.

1.5 times the gross vehicle weight. So, say the folks at Warn Winch.

The minitrucks weigh about 1500-lbs, and have a load capacity of about 750-lbs, for a GVW of 2250. 1.5 times that is 3375-lbs. So, Warn would recommend a 3500-lbs rated winch.

I bought a 4,500-lb winch for my Hijet, which is oversized. But, it is a tipper/lift, which the factory rated at 1400-lbs load capacity at speeds less than 10-mph, and I sometimes load it pretty heavy when puttering around the place. So I used 2900-lbs as the GVW, which gave the 4500-lb rating.

3500 should be all you need. I went with a 2500# for $50 from harbor freight and keep a snatch block behind the seat just in case I need to double line it.

How are you mounting that winch? Buying a receiver from someone or building a mount?

I figured that I would bolt something like this receiver to the front guard. Then fabricate a mount on a 2” insert so that the winch could be used front or rear.

I'll have to take a look under my truck and see. I wish those radiators were located a bit higher. I was thinking of getting a winch installed this last week but ran out of time before heading out for the upcoming holiday. I did get my rifle and magazines mounted as well as installed a couple of magnets to fit my Glock by the shifter that turned out very clean. I just finished loading up the toy hauler and Freightliner, and I'm ready to head to Idaho for a week. Then Tuesday of next week I'll separate from the group were camping with and leave the semi for my brother to drive back home. I'm taking the mini up through Lolo pass into Missoula and then up to Fairmount hot springs for some R&R. Later to the Army base for the following weekend for a yellow ribbon ceremony to see my daughter and her group deploy to the sandbox for a year. I'll drive the mini back from Montana to Washington on I90 trying not to get run down by big trucks. Should be fun and I have some time to kill. I am bringing a set of street tires to get these heavy terrain tires off the truck. They suck up a shit ton of power at freeway speed.
I have my cot tent and small stove and pans ice chest for the mini for my Montana only part of the trip and of course AAA. She's running like a top. The air is blowing cold everything is serviced what could go wrong? Couple spare tires just for fun. I'll see about posting up some pics, and hopefully, I'll see some other minis along the way? Probably do a winch next month getting ready for the fall hunts. IMG_0597.JPG IMG_0604.JPG IMG_0597.JPG IMG_0604.JPG IMG_0603.JPG do a winch next month getting ready for the fall hunts.

I went with a warn Axon 5500 on amazon, it was priced lower than the actual price of the 3500 on the prime day. I did not install it yet since I am still working on my dump bed conversion.

I should be receiving my mini next Friday. 1995 Suzuki Carry with scissor lift. I plan on mounting a Badlands (Harbor Freight) winch, rated at 3500# and using that in conjunction
with a Bercomac snowthrower this winter. This is my first mini so have no idea how exactly I'll be mounting the winch yet until I have the vehicle "in hand". Any advice or insights from those who have already mounted a winch?

@Watercat If you're headed by CDA, I'm on the south end of the lake (near Conkling Marina and Resort) and if the rig is here you just may see us rolling along!

@Watercat How did your mini do on the trip - especially on I90?
I've topped mine out at 40mph and wouldn't want to drive it very far with the high-revving engine. Any issues on the trip?

  12. Hey I'm hoping you can help me, I've also got a 99 carry, I'm having problems with draining the battery, I don't know if it's just a bad battery or something else. I've got an electrical snapping sound coming from the passenger side top end of my motor, is that normal? With your passenger seat up, can you hear anything like that coming from your motor? Thank you:)

    Troy,
Electrical snapping sounds are never good! Especially when you know that the battery is being drained. Something is arcing and or shorting out!!! Not familiar with the carry, but if you disconnect the battery, and look where the sound is coming from, you'll find something. Burnt wire, or something. Use your nose. Another way, which can be a little more dangerous, is to have someone help you, by replicating the scenario all over again, while you are already in position, going right to the source! Most qualified mechanics will do it this way, time being money. Good Luck, keep us posted.

Troy, I'd definitely be worried about the "snapping" sound and like Limestone says, I'd suspect an arc if its electrical.

As far as the battery draining... Is it draining while running? That means the alternator is bad. Draining while parked? Could be an old battery and the cells can't hold a charge OR there is an electrical drain - something pulling current that shouldn't be OR it could be environmental - too hot or too cold for the battery that's installed. I'm in north Idaho and the stock battery can't handle the cold temps parked overnight.

General reply back to winches.... Warn does recommend wich size based on GVWR except in the case of ATV/UTV. So if your use of your mini is more UTV than daily driver you may want to upsize.
The link to Warn page with their sizing recommendations is here: https://www.warn.com/how-to-choose-the-right-winch

    Limestone,
A lot of great info here! It all depends on what your needs are. It's always better to have more, or bigger and not need it, than to need bigger, or stronger, (more) and not have it! The worst is "I THINK IT WILL WORK"! Then when it doesn't Someone gets hurt and S;*# breaks! Most people don't know how to rig things up. Earlier, snatch blocks were mentioned, and taking into account the weight of the machine, you can only do so much with these little things! REMEMBER; THESE ARE LIGHT DUTY MINI TRUCKS! Go easy and enjoy! We all remember the three wheelers, before they were outlawed! Somebody stated in another mini truck forum, that we don't need the heat brought down on mini trucks by creating a lot of problems, by doing stupid stuff with them! I like Jigs, have the scissor lift on mine. I'm not gonna park it on a slope with the emergency brake off, and raise the bed! COMMON SENSE! Ok, I'm climing down off my box and heading to the garage to work on my mini!Hahaha Have fun guys!

  17. Gentleman I thank you for your help. The electrical snapping sound is constant, as soon as I start the engine it there, top left side of my motor, the only thing that is there are my injectors but it sounds almost like it's in my top end. I dunno, I'm stumped but I'm going back at it today!:) And my multimeter is saying my alternator is pushing 13v and my battery is draining while driving. when my battery is pretty much dead, my carry runs and drives but as soon as you turn the headlights, blinker, four-ways on, I lose all power and if the headlights are on, I lose my horn. Does that sound like a weak alternator or a short somewhere? Again, thank you guys so much. I'm Troy from Canada

Look around in the dark, if it's snapping, you ought to be able to see where it's arcing and find a solution.

You might want to remove that alternator and have it bench tested. I would take okei's advice and check it in the dark first!
