hey guys kinda new to the mini trucks but i have a 95 suzuki carry and its smoking out of the intake and runs quite rough. i was told cylinder #2 has no compression at all. (when i bought it) so my question is, what is the easiest way to change the head gasket? take out the engine? remove the cab? also if i need to take out the engine do i just drop it from the bottom? If#2 has no compression at all , i don’t think a head gasket will help you. piston may have a hole in it. or value is stuck. You should pull the motor .
If you decide to pull engine drop the trans. and then drop engine. First time apox. 1 1/2 hrs. and it will be sitting on the floor. It sure helps if you can put it on a high lift. Make sure you take pictures of the vacuum lines coming off carb. or mark them really good.
Ya I was thinking about it being a stuck valve....I'm not ready to pull th motor. lol I wish I had a lift! Thanks for the tips about pulling the engine.

well i got decided not to pull the motor. I pulled the bed off(im planning to paint it anyway). And i got down to the head bolts and couldnt find a 8mm hex bit socket anywhere in my garage so i picked one up today and i guess ill see what happens tonight. BTW i did a compression check and im getting 1-165 2-30 3-170 so i guess they are all ok except 2 but it DOES have a bit of compression so i guess there isnt a hole in the piston . Anybody wana take a guess whether its the headgasket or bent/bad valve seats? Ill try to update tonight what i find
well not that i was hoping for something major but i got the head off and everything seems to be fine. I even poured some seafoam(it was all i could find atm) into the exhaust ports and also the intake ports and they didnt seem to leak. or atleast if they did it was very little over time. anyway here are some pics if anyone wants to look....
Ive never actually taken the head of an engine b4 but... is that cyl on the left in the first pic supposed to be so derned black? And is it normal to see coolant all over the place?
The coolant, is because there are coolant ports going from head to block so if you dont drain the coolant it will go everywhere when you pull the head lol And usually you will have SOME carbon build up on the pistons as well as the head(combustion chamber) but there is DEFINENTLY alot of carbon build up on this one. Not sure if i would consider that normal. 72k KM. wouldnt mind hearing some other opinions?
anyone know the best way to clean these pistons? or if i even need to? also what about the top of the block? just a scraper? and use copper coat to help?

Milmor88: If you click on a persons name under their avatar, it opens an info page, which tells you the last time they were on teh site. Jay rod hasn’t been on since 2010. If you have bad compression in one cylinder like that the best way to determine what is happening is a cylinder leak down tester: You hook it up, and put compressed air into the cylinder. If you hear it in the exhaust or intake you know the valves aren’t seating. If you get Bubbles in teh radiator it has a bad gasket. And, if you can hear it in the oil fill hole the rings are bad. Harbor freight sells an ok unit for about twice the cost of their compression tester. Looking at the pictures of the engine and cylinder head, you can see a bit of a leak track, at the cylinder that is black and oily looking. There was a slow coolant leak there.
I tested compression yesterday...50 psi in first two cylinders, 150 in the last one. Makes a weird whooshing noise when cranking. Wish there was a harbor freight around here...4 hours away!
Check the valve lash. If the valve lash is too tight, they won’t be all the way closed on the compression stroke, and will bleed air past the valves. Also, shoot a little oil into the spark plug hole before putting the compression tester in. If the compression comes up, the rings are suspect.
jigs gave some great tips.... seems like ive got the same problem with my 95 model... either valves not closing or rings are shot... getting a ton of blow by with only 50K on the motor.
I used my compression tester and took out the schrater valve and put somethign to hold the cam from moving...looks like it's leaking between two adjacent cylinders. My second mini truck that I purchased but seemed underpowered tested 150 150 and 30 psi...crap, can't win....also on the valve lash these are both dual overhead cam
