Help, broke the left rear DOJ

Discussion in 'Subaru Sambar' started by Georgia mountain man, Apr 16, 2019.

  1. Well I went and broke the inside CV joint on my 92 Sambar KS4. Can anyone out there explain how to remove it from the Transmission/transfer case? It has the diff lock if that matters. Thanks

double check, but as far as i can remember its the same as the front CV axles where the diff side has a pin you need to drive out with a punch and hammer then you can remove the axle from the diff, then just unbolt/hammer out of the drum

  3. I cleaned all the road grime off of the DOJ I can't locate a spring pin on the DOJ. Is it possible that being a dump truck it has a different DOJ?

hmm should be the same axle, if theres no pin it might just pop out of the transmission once you undo the axle bolt from the drum hub and bang it out, if i get time tomorrow night i'll see if mine has a pin

  5. Turns out the truck is an AG version. the transmission and Axel's are different from the street models. I did manage to find a company near Atlanta, GA that can rebuild these Axel's.

It really depends on the truck, as 1992 was a transitional year.

    1990-some 1992s have roll pins.
    Some 1992s-1999 have snap rings.

And, to make it worse.. you cant just tell from the month, it really depended on the model as to when they switched over. My 1992 KS4 w/Diff Lock has roll pins, but I have seen a 1992 KS4 that was made a month earlier than mine that had snap rings. As such, there are a BUNCH of different CVs for the 1992 model year.

What do you mean by "AG" version? I am not familiar with that term.

Ah, okay.. that is called the "JA" trim or model, for the JA (Japan Agriculture) Group

My original point still stands, there are both versions for 1992 KS4 JA models, it just depends on what version of the transmission actually ended up in the truck. The only real reliable way to determine is to either physically look for the roll pins, or to look up the VIN in the official Subaru parts tool.

What a coincidence. I broke mine as well. I wonder if it has anything to do with the lift kit we installed? Do you mind sharing that place that rebuilds them?

Nevermind, I found where you posted it in the thread "cv repair" . Thanks.

Apparently the JA Sambars have different axles than the standard model. I wound up removing the rear lift and haven't had any more problems. C.B Source is great. Just tell them what you have and they can fix it. Usually 1 day turn around. Ron

Well I have removed the boot and looked everywhere and I haven't been able to find a pin or a snap ring holding the doj to the diff.... Does anyone have a picture of where to look?

Check out this video that 4nines posted in the Sambar forum. It shows him taking out the axel when he replaced the axel boot. It may help you. It’s the front axel, not sure if the rear is the same.

    Good luck.

just the pin holding the front CV axles in, just changed one of mine. couple hits on the pin with a punch/hammer and the axle slid right out of the front diff

Well it's a no go. There is no pin, no circlip and I've pried as hard as I feel comfortable with no results. I don't think I need to remove it anyway if I can find a replacement tripod joint.

That's super weird yours doesn't have a roll pin, I'm going to be doing my brakes later today I can take a picture of my pin to make sure

so for sure you dont have this pinhole? ive never seen a 1990-1998 KS4 without this

this is where the pin goes on through the front diff

this is what the pin looks like, i ordered some new ones from Subaru. just whack it with a flat-end punch and hammer, once its out theres nothing else holding the CV axle to the front diff, just the nut to the front spindle

I do not have a hole on mine on either side of the rear diff. I haven't checked the front.

No I couldn't. I had looked in the manual and looked extensively for any kind of roll pin or circlip, but there was no evidence. I was told by G&R that the ones without a roll pin would come off with a few licks from a hammer, but I beat on it for a while and gave up. I finally just left it on there and jacked the control arm down until I could fit the tripod joint into it.

i was incorrect, my 1997 actually has no rollpins on any of the 4 axles like my 1991 did so i couldnt use my old front axle. Yokohama motors said newer style KS4 dont have the rollpin and its a different CV axle entirely, when it comes in i'll post how to replace the non rollpin type

That would be great, because when I eventually lengthen my axles, I'll need to do that to get it put back together.

The holes for the roll pins do tend to collect dirt and blend in. I did not see the pins on mine at first and I was beating on it with a slide hammer for a bit before I found the pins.

thats what i thought too but my 97 for sure has no roll pins and the inner axle is a different design than my 91, my replacement axles on the way from Japan so i'll see how replacement goes. hopefully before the snow hits lol

97 would absolutely have clips and not pins. 91 would have pins for sure as well.. the transition was somewhere in 1992/1993.

Mine's a 94 and I cleaned and examined and there are no roll pins.

clips like old Toyotas and Hondas where once you unbolt the CV axle from the spindle you just take a pry bar between the diff and axle then pop it out?

got the axle replaced, late gen KS4 only have a snap ring holding it to the diff. just remove the lower balljoint from the spindle, unbolt the outer tie rod, unbolt the strut from the spindle, remove the caliper assembly and hang it, the punch out/air hammer the axle from the spindle then remove the axle from the diff with a pry bar
