    All,
I just purchased a 1988 DB71T w/ F5A back in March, the engine was smoking but ran slugish. So I purchase a slightly used engine shipped from Japan, looks brand new. So this past weekend I removed the old engine and clean out all the parts and verified working order before transplanting them onto the new. So to adjust and put on the distributor housing I first assumed the timing on the new engine was correct since it came off a working truck, so I proceeded to take the valve cover off and find TDC of piston#1 (both rocker arms were not touching the valve spring - compression stage) and also checked the sight hole on the flywheel to align the "T" on the transmission casing (at this point if the crank and cam gears arent in timing I assume the T would not line up). Then I put on the distributor housing with having the rotor pointing as close as possible to firing Spark Plug #1. The engine fires right up no problem, I check the timing with a timing gun and it starts reading at 40 degress! so I turn the distributor all the way to the right and the lowest timing I can get is 15 degress and idling fine. At this point at neutral I give it some gas and the rpms increases then it bogs down as if it was starving fuel. I then test drive it, 1st and 2nd are ok, 3rd hesitates and 4th just wants to kill the engine.

    What is wrong? Im lost.

Is it a Carb issue? Should I take the distributor housing back off and retard the timing to see if I can get it closer to 7 degrees?

Since I am overhauling this truck to be like new, I cleaned out every fuel line, removed all carbon from EGR valve/lines, using non-ethanol gas. Checked vacuum lines Also, exhaust smells like its running rich (confirms with black smoke when I accelerate). Does anyone have the link for the Carb tuning manual from Don in Japan? I cant find his post with the instructions.

I posted a video of the issue on youtube, if anyone can assist in helping me solve my problem.

Please help, since winter is coming I use this truck to cut firewood.
    Thank You in advance.

Sounds like you have the distributor off a tooth.I used to have that manual that Don posted but can't find it now, have you looked at the "desperately need tuning help" thread? There is some good info there.

Ok, i took another stab at it tonight... Jim was right as i was off on gear tooth. I now can adjust the timing to 7-10 degress..but the engine sounds worse as i adjust closer to 7.. its sounds more better near 10. And at 10 there is a small backfire throught the carb.

FRUSTATING... i finally get in timing, but sounds worse
i took a test drive and now i cant go past 1st gear without dying on me in 2nd.

Is there anyone near Tulsa oklahoma that would be willing to fix my carry? Of course i would pay. Im just tired of taking things off and adjusting here and there... if i was retired it would be ok, but i dont bave time to mess around with it .

Usually the problems with these trucks is vacuum related but every now and then it will actually be the carb and us back yard guys just can't get them right. I know Hatch just went through a long ordeal with his truck and finally sent the carb to G&R Imports to have it rebuilt with great results.Trax n Horns uses an outfit in Ohio named Hite, not sure of the spelling, and he has been happy with them. They usually run between $250 to$300.
