New Muffler

Discussion in 'Daihatsu Hi jet' started by CobequidTrails, Jul 23, 2015.

  1. Getting a new free flowing muffler installed tomorrow... it's an Allis Chalmers tractor muffler made by Walker. Here's a pic...

It's basically an industrial Cherry bomb... will try and take a video of it and post it up. It will be replacing everything back of the manifold

how about the crinkly bendable exhaust pipe. The one that goes back to your breather. are you also replacing that ? If yes could you tell me if it's hard to get or something I could buy a local auto shop.

Also do you think you will be able to increase Hp ?
    Tony

  4. That air intake heater pipe is rusted off of my exhaust so I won't be replacing it as it doesn't seem to have any effect on the running of the truck.
As far as an increase in hp, I know it will a bit as I have put a K&N air filter on as well. Less restriction in and less out makes the engine more efficient... I have already noticed a difference in throttle response since I replaced the air filter.

K& N air filter. I don't know much about them. Something I should learn about , I guess.

  8. Mines a bit raspier than Fupas... still playing with the carb settings to get it smoothed out.

    Will post a video shortly...

Ya with the engine able to breath better its probably running lean. Not sure if you can shim up the needle and just tweek the idle air screw to fix the mixture. I have yet to find a good info on a complete tear down on the carb

  10. Oh... I've had mine over three years.

  11. No, my carb is running great, I'm just playing with it a bit especially after the getting the exhaust on.

cool so you noticed a change in performance with the k and n thats good to know as i had no reference. I will probably not put the walker can on untill i get ready to put a skid plate the length of the belly. the stock muffler hangs pretty low when you include the guards is the big reason i want to replace it. the exhaust on my truck is pretty mint.

Concerning your skid plate fabrication. If you care to look up my post-- bumper fabrication-- my intention was to extend from my crash bar back to both cross members. using 3/4" solid round stock. I believe this will offer protection to transmission . I'll post pictures later on this week after fabrication. but will welcome discussion regarding skip plates

  14. Well, here's the video of the exhaust sound... you can obviously discern my tech skills with video taking...lol

have you had it out on the road for some runs to see how much different if pulls? sounds loud and the weather hasnt been movie making friendly. do you have pictures of where the pipe runs under the truck? my muffler swap should be fairly painless when i do it as i have a dump box and work from the top :)

  16. Mines a dump as well but they did it from the bottom... easier to get to the manifold pipe. I will snap some pics of the install later.
It definitely pulls better.. from the seat-o-pants meter I'd say at least 10% maybe 20... from the audio meter it's 100% louder... got a cool sound at higher revs. Still not done with tuning... might try tweaking the ignition timing.

Cool I dont want to make to much noise but would like a bit more guts in 4th and 5th gear. The 155/80r13 are a fair bit taller than stock.

Any updates on this? I am thinking I need to ditch the cat on my truck as it was probably running rich for some time in Japan before i got it as they cut the wire to the exhaust temp sensor just aft of the cat

  19. A bit loud but am pleased with the extra power... definitely cut or gut the cat... they cut the wire because the cat is getting plugged and overheating.

If you are interested, we could try and meet up so you can get a feel first hand the changes I've made.
