DD51T repair

I posted a few weeks ago about my hard starting DD51T. After cleaning my carb with no improvement, I tore into the valves and solved the problem. It now starts at the bump of the key, so on to the next problem.

I have experienced a popping sound when operating in 4x4. After doing much research here I surmised that I may have too large a lift. Quite frankly, it was lifted when I got it and didn't know how much lift was in it and the problems it could cause. I measured and the front spacer over the strut was 3". I knew, from here, that was most likely the problem.

Today I managed to get the axle out of the passenger side. I can't find any apparent damage to the CV joints, other than the piece of wire in the inside CV joint. It looks like the shaft or CV got into it and wore it then and tore it up. The bearing or piece on the inside end of the shaft with the 6 ball bearings looked fine when I cleaned it up. The outboard boot was intact, but showed signs of dry rot. My plan is to order 2 boots/clips and put it back together.

My biggest question is where can I get the wire piece that goes in the inboard CV joint? I don't see it anywhere.

Secondly, I've already dropped the strut and removed the 3" spacer. I have ordered heavier coil springs, and want to go that route. Can anyone point me to a thread or video of the spring installation. Local auto parts store rents a coil spring compressor, I figured I will get that to help.

Thirdly, I unbolted the lower control arm and the ball joint seems to move smoothly and be lubricated, but the rubber is split. Is this a replaceable part, or does the whole control arm need replaced.

I'll update how things go, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction if I don't end up finding the info on here somewhere. Thanks.

Does anyone have a part number, or a place I can buy the wire ring that holds the inner cv joint together. The large ring that holds the CV together, not the ring that holds it in the differential.

Years ago when I was into ATVs, the go to for most anything related to CV joints was "the CV Man" . I think he was in Michigan, but don't remember. He could furnish anything for most any joint then in use. Don't know ifhe is still around or not, you will have to search for.

Do you mean the retainer ring?

Perhaps. It's the round wire ring that holds the cv inside the hub (that hooks to the differential) The largest ring.

My cousin used a ring from a different 4x4, all I know is that he made some cutting and few grinding. As long as its a perfect snug inside the groove I guess its just as good as the original. It was kind of last resort for him . I bet you can find universal clip/retainers around.

I think, in my own opinion, you can do good without retainer rings installed. It only holds the two parts together during service, in case it falls on to dirt parts inside wont be exposed.
