93 Carry wont start after timing belt repair

After getting my carb finally dialed in and cleaning the coolant lines going to it i had this thing running like a top. 93 carry 126k kms. My wifes daily driver for the last year and half. Last year installed new timing belt while performing the tune up just the like the great thread on here.

Well a couple weeks ago the the truck was running fine like usually when it just idled to a stop and shut off. As i dug into the situation, i found the the timing belt was snapped in half. Waited for belt to arrive in mail. while it was down i decided to change air filter, tranny & diff oils, replace some vaccum lines, and install new valve cover gasket and distributor o-ring. Well when the belt arrived i installed it and went through the timing procedure. Set crank to TDC - T mark on flywheel, cam shaft mark on spoke align back cover, and make sure rotor pointing at #1 wire. Turned key on and cranked with no avail. Okay, no problem maybe im 180 out of phase on the crank. Forum searching here i come.. back to truck. opened valve cover to verify No. 1 Cylinder valves all closed and put hand over plug hole to feel pressure escaping plug hole as crank was rotated clockwise into aligmemt. Gotta be in phase. Well i thought maybe when i was changing the distributor o-ring that maybe the gears of the distributor might not be in the right spot so i made sure again the that when the distributor was bolted back to the head that the rotor was still on the No.1 cylinder. Checked spark at plugs and showing big blue spark while cranking. Checked compression and all were at 105 +- 10 psi (low but consistent for this old girl- i believe that would eliminate a bent valve ?) while trouble shooting i tried rotating the distributor to advance the timing and it seemed promising like it wanted to start but wouldnt. I tried advancing the timing via rotating the rotor with the distributor unbolted again but that didnt work either and put it back to where it was pointing at the No 1 wire.

I did dump a cap full of gas in the no1 cylinder and and gave it a crank and listened to it fire it and run on one cylinder until the gas was burned up. Now im thinking maybe a carb issue and need to pull the fuel line and see if fuel shooting out the line?

A few things in my quest: Trying to figure out why timing belt broke after a year. is this just a red herring to my real problem? Whats next. If i have fuel pressure going into carb where do i go next. Always appreciate the help.

Wow man.......... A lot of things going on here hahaha.

First I'd pull the return line off the carb and see if ya got fuel returning to the tank...... If you do........ Have you changed BOTH fuel filters? Then I'd double triple check your firing order and make sure you didn't accidently put the plug wires on the cap back word, I've done it a time or two hahaha.

Thanks for the reply!! Sometimes i feel like just posting on here helps me out. Ill make sure that i post what the fix is too, it drives me nuts reading threads on here that just die off. Ill give the return line a check instead of the feed line which what i was thinking of looking at first. I replaced both fuel filters last year, but who knows whats in this crappy Nome fuel!

I hear ya!!! I've experienced Nome, such harbor, bethel, dillingham............. Village fuel hahaha water in the bowl would definitely stop fuel flow. Have you pulled all the fuel out of the tank and looked at it? When we got out 94 carry............ You wouldn't believe the crap I pulled out. Flushed the tank about ten times.

Thanks for reaching out! I know a couple of other alaskans on here and its always nice to get help from someone that knows what happens up here! Well when i got off work today i got back into working on the truck. I pulled off the fuel return line from where it comes of the hardline and checked to make sure that fuel was coming out when i cranked it over. It seemed to be just weeping out but figured that was probably enough fuel. When i cranked it over it ran for about 15 seconds or so before it died which sent me down the timing rabbit one last time. I figured that when i replaced the o ring off of the distributor that i had been one spline off from where the dizzy connects to the head, This in turn had me too Retarded on the timeing not alowing it to run. It was like i needed to twist the distributor more than what was allowed by the star nut even thought the rotor looked like it was on the #1 plug wire. Ah well. At least it was something easy!! I always come away learning more and more about these little guys and have fun doing it too!

I got a set of the monroe 31000 rear shocks to put on while I was trying to get the truck started but it started before i put them on. Now it will be much better throwing those on now the truck is running! It seems to always help me figure stuff out when i work on something else.... Best part is its running before the wife gets home;)
