S83p runs fine then dies.

    Hey everyone,

I am new to the mini trucks. I have a s83p that runs fine for about 5-8 mins then starts running rough and dies. It smokes a little at that time also. Will not start back until it sits awhile. I recently replaced plug wires, dist. Cap and rotor button with no luck. I just cleaned and rebuilt carb still no luck. Replaced all vacuum lines due to a small family of mice and still no luck.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Could be a number of things. Remember you have to have 3 things working for engine to run, spark, fuel and air.
First get a can of start fluid. Remove air filter and keep air box open. Start truck, as soon as it dies hit it with start fluid. If it starts right up with start fluid you most likely have a fuel delivery problem. If it doesnt start I would recheck all vacuum lines and check to make sure you have spark 100% of the time(Pull each plug one at a time leave in spark plug cap , ground spark plug threads and turn over engine making sure you have good spark).
Could have water in fuel, could have a stopped up fuel filter, could have build up on contacts inside dist. cap, could have something getting hot(coil) and craps out, and the list goes on.
Also a weak battery will sometimes act good and appears to turn over engine ok but not quite fast enough. Make sure you have a hot battery.
S83p's are one of my favorite trucks and pretty simple.
Might do a compression test on each cylinder for grins and see what they are.

    Thanks Trax,

Dropped the gas tank today, and replaced fuel filter, no luck. It is getting fuel to the carb. It has new plug wires and cap but can't seem to find the right socket for the plugs.

It's almost like something changes when the engine is warm. I tried the starting fluid with no luck. I replaced all vacuum lines a while back but will double check them again.

Also I noticed the gas tank had pressure on it when I took the cap loose.

Any more help would be appreciated.

Gas tank will have a little pressure from the return line off engine. Figure it out and blow through it. Dist. cap corrosion?
If its not starting right back up with start fluid you have a fuel problem( internal carb. flooding) or a electric problem is my take.
    Can you small gas?

It has a new Dist. Cap, and I do smell fuel like it's flooding. I rebuilt the card today with no luck. I adjusted the float level and will try again tomorrow. Another thing is it smokes a good bit when it starts messing up. I will get a coil off another parts truck I have and go from there. Compression check cold and hot will be next on my list. Thanks again for the help.

If you messed with the floats I would put my best efforts towards trouble shooting the carb. If smelling fuel something's staying open(needle/seat, float).
As simple as they are they can be a pain in the ass. The ones we did rebuild always had a little bog to them so
several yrs ago we started sending them off to have them rebuilt or order a new rebuilt one from Japan.
Saves a lot of headaches. Yes it cost but when you have to pull one off and on a couple three of four times it's worth it.
A rebuild that's been flow tested or a new rebuild from Japan keeps the customers happy. Get it bolt it up turn key and away you go. Last one I ordered 7 - 8 months ago was 380.00+ - from Yokohama Motors in Japan.
Hite Parts here in the states rebuild them and do a good job, looks and operates like new. Knock on wood never had a problem with them other than the turn around(2 weeks).

Thanks for the info on the Carb. I don't mind spending some money if it will fix it.

How about the spark plug socket size. I tried the search function, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Off the top of my head i dont remember. 17mm/19mm? I think. Sometimes when we get trucks there will be a little tool kit in the glove box from factory and they have the plug socket in it.

your carb probably has a low speed fuel cut off solenoid ( green wire under the choke setup at back of carb - bitch to get at ) to prevent run on when you shut it off. check your fuses as one may be blown ( 10 amp ). If it continues to blow, you may also have a problem with the vacuum solenoid controlling fuel vapors that is mounted on the air filter box.

    Good Luck
