HOW TO: Installing Mazda RX7 rims on a Hijet

So there are lots of threads about tires... here's one with pics and "how-to"s...

Start with one '91 Hijet, add wheels from an '82 RX-7. The rear wheels bolt up fine, but the fronts need to be machined to fit over the bump on the brake drum. It would probably be better in my opinion to remove the hubs and have them turned down to fit inside the Mazda wheels (60mm dia), but I couldnt get the hubs off. SO: take two of the tires to the tire shop, remove the rubber. Take the rims to a machine shop, have them bore the holes out to 67mm, roughly 1" deep from the back side. No need to go all the way through. Return to tire store, mount and balance tires.

Seems like a lot of material to take off, but it looks like there is plenty left. The hole doesnt support any weight anyways, its held on the lugnuts.

The lugnuts ARE too small, but they work. No need for longer lugs.

The trick is to put all four nuts on and loosely snug them up which centers the wheel. Then get 'em good and tight.

As for clearance- it was tough to get the back wheels under the fender- took some finangling but they fit fine. The front's did have a slight clearance issue with the fender that was easily rectified with a hammer.

Seems to ride much nicer now and definitely geared much taller, but haven't really had much of a chance to test it out yet. PLUS- Now I have 4 spare tires!

Hey that looks just like my truck...lol

Where did you find the rims at?

Found them on Craigslist... It took me about 3 months of looking before I finally found someone with a "parts car" that was willing to sell just PARTS and not the whole car. Little more expensive than I had hoped, but well worth it!

Does anybody have a source for longer wheel studs - 55 - 60mm long ? I have a set of Mazda "Turbine" mags, but the flange is over 1" thick. I have search, but everybody is out of stock. Dorman part # 610-427-1 M12-1.5 x 55.25mm serrated wheel stud - also fits Ford Taurus 2007-00, Mercury Sable 2006 - 00 and Continental 2002 - 00.

    Help

I just did the rx-7 wheel swap on my deckvan. I opted replace the lug nuts as the stock ones seemed a little sketchy. The truck does drive better with the 13's on asphalt, It's still not a ferarri but it's better. IMO it is way better on gravel. The 175's went right on with no clearance issues.

Here's the breakdown on what it cost me, Your results could vary.

$100 for the wheels delivered to my work from a guy on CL
$85 for the machine work, I had all 4 done but you only NEED to have 2 done
$24 for lugnuts, again this is optional but I felt better about having them fill the pocket
    $80 for mount,balance & valve stems
$50 for a set of used 175/70/13's from Woody (Calling these tires used is really a stretch, Thanks Dan)
$339 grand total - I was planning to get these blasted & painted but I saw $300 come up in the mirror and pass me so that had to wait. I had to draw the line somewhere, I sure can't with my bike.

Can't help on the wheel studs.

the rims will not bolt on the back of my 95 hijet with a 3 way dump. the rims would have to be bored out same as the front. but i decided to use 8mm spacers and not machine the rims for the time being.

Nice write up... I have 79-80 Mazda (Rx7 Toyo Kogyo) rims on mine and to fit those on was about the same. Only difference is the need for the extended lugs. I was able to find some extra ones at Autozone here in the states. But clearance is no issues.

Well I used a router and a rabbeting bit to open up the bore to fit on the hubs. Ended being dumb and cheap. I had gotten a used router with bits. It had a small babeting bit but needed a smaller bearing on it so I bought a another bit with a smaller bearing. The dumb thing was I measured the bearing and the bit. Bearing was 9mm the bit was 12mm and it through great that's 3mm about just what I need to remove. Not lol forgot the half it. So I had to machine in 2 steps to make it fit. It worked just took more setup. Also I used a angled bit and route red another chamfer on the edge of the bore. I will post some pics up once I can upload them to photo bucket. It too about 4 hours to do and I bought a used router with table and a case of bits for 140. A local machine shop quoted me it take atleast an hour a wheel and the rate was 65. So it could of cost between 300-400 to machine my 100 dollar rims for the truck that cost at auction 1600 dollars. This is why I routered them myself
