I have a '94 hi-jet that is having ignition problems. It was driving/starting fine, until one afternoon after starting and going about 20 feet it completely stopped like it was out of gas (of course it was not). I inspected the carb and it's getting gas just fine, the plugs are less than a month old, and the battery is two months old. What's the next thing I should check? Thanks to the forum - I'm a new follower and had the truck for a while with no problems till now.
Welcome jbrskeet13! Fuel, fire and compression. We're getting fuel, so what about a spark? Might also take a look under your distributor cap.
I grounded the spark plugs and got no spark. the plugs had a good bit of gas on them. took the distributer cap off and there was carbon build up on the nodes. Scraped it off and noticed the rotor was locked up. I assume it should be free spinning? What does this mean if it's not?
Free spinning? It wil turn if your engine is turning. I dont remember if the rotor turns with the crank shaft or the cam Shaft, could it be your timing belt that is broken? Try to start, if the rotor doesent turn, open your oil cap on your valve cover you should se your valves mooving when you crank the starter. If not you blew the timing belt. Good luck.
The rotor in the distributor is keyed onto the distributor shaft. The dristrbutor is also connected to the camshaft. The camshaft is connected to the crank via the timing belt. Even if the belt was broken I don't think you could turn the rotor due to the spring tension of the valve springs against the cam. Test at the coil see if you have voltage there.
Are these engine interference engines? If they are and the cam belt is broken you would jam some of the valves into the top of the pistons. The valves would bend.
