Rear wheel brake cylinders - replacement parts options for DD51T

Just tried to find a rear brake cylinder to replace a stuffed one on my Dd51t.

Nothing listed in NZ at all. Managed to find that early ford/Mazda units from 80's to around 1990 are externally identical. Only difference is a slightly smaller bore diameter (17mm vs 19mm). I'm using my truck off road on the farm and it's the rear drum so I'm not too worried (i'm replacing the opposite side to balance it up too).

I'm posting this as a tip should others struggle to find replacements cylinders.

Yes, put the early Ford/Mazda unit in the rear left (part code JB3002) and it fits perfectly - identical except for a 17.5mm internal diameter barrel (Carry has a 19mm).

Given the rear are drums and the front are discs I doubt whether there would be any discernable difference. I was hoping to switch the right rear also, but the Ford/Mazda unit had one hydraulic port and one bleeder valve that side (ie it must have had a splitter over the rear diff), where the Carry right rear is an inline unit (two hydraulic line ports - one from the master and one to left rear cylinder).

    I figured the inside ID wouldn't make a difference(2mm).
Bet it was cheaper than a oem cylinder.

    Question/

    Was that for a metric line/ 10mmx1.25 ?

BTW, you can replace the right side, just have to install a line splitter @ $15, metric

Guys don't realize (readers here) that once you get in there, and get it all apart, you probly need to do some line work anyway. Rusty, broken, twisted, stripped line ends, and that the $100 OEM part out of the box is not going to help you avoid fixing things/modding things anyway.

You can see that with a different size bore, you will tend to drag the one tire though right?

You might do a search for Airhead Motors. They specialize in VW's but they have quite an assortment of brake fittings, lines, & parts and all in metric. Few years ago I was doing some major brake work on a VW and I don't think the cost was near that much for a splitter. Times and prices change, but sometimes it does pay to shop around and doesn't cost anything.

Please do as has been mentioned, and keep your braking even and balanced or you can create a very unsafe condition, plus as a thought if something were to happen, most insurance companies will look for any way out of paying due to a non-OEM replacement.

Yes, that's exactly the cylinder I put into the left rear of my DD51T (no adjustments necessary and existing brakelines screwed straight in - so they're metric). Given it's a farm vehicle that's had a good hard life, the difference in bore is of no consequence to me (especially since the old cylinder had a leak and has ruined the pads). The most important thing is that the front disc brakes are good (as they carry the stopping weight, not the very light rear end - esp. on slopes) and I've just given them a clean up and bleed and they're good.

If you want perfectly equal power at the back I'd go the route you mentioned and put a splitter over the rear diff and use two of these units. I'd remade a new left to right rear brake line prior to replacing the cylinder. Maybe I'll get around to splitting it and replacing the right rear cylinder in due course. I have far more pressing things, like front diff bearings/seals and shafts/boots rebuild etc.

A ha, I got you loud and clear now rob8888,

Perfectly good fix for what you're using her for and only a few bucks; as it should be.

fmartin_gila, just be careful about using the word insur**** around here. That's generally a sore spot in north america vs minitrucks, and for sure, I'm not going to critique my mods/fixes as dictated by some desk driver (insur**** broker) that spends his days trying to figure out new ways to give it to me from behind. (just joking...but also, not really)
Really, the only thing insur**** is good for, is for the binder that sits in the glove compartment all year, and makes it a little easier to get tags every two years.
AND, I pay as little as possible for both; all the hobby money goes into parts and gas around here...

Seriously though, you are both kinda a little new but, glad to have you both on the site; we need more involved members like yourselves to join up...

I know the reply is a couple years later, but found this thread then did some searching / cross referencing and came up with 1989 Mazda 323 here in the USA. So, I looked on rockauto and found a photo, compared with a DD51t wheel cylinder on ebay and they sure look the same. Since rockauto had some on clearance for $2 each, I ordered two of them, figured it's worth a shot since I need to replace mine and don't want to spend $120

Rock auto part number? Did they have the splitter too?

Just for reference. Speedway Motors carries quite a selection of brake fittings and lines. I have made up brake systems utilizing their parts in the past.
