Front winch bumper

My new front bumper with winch mount so I could mount a hydraulic "V" plow.

First thing I did was get rid of these little angles on each side that the service manual says are for placing jack stands under the truck.

In their place I welded a piece of 2x2 tubing with a piece of tube that 2x2 will telescope in welded to it. I added some bracing to them also.

I made bumper brackets that slip in to the tube.

I re-enforced the tube guard that was on the truck with a piece of 1x2 channel to be the rear mounting point for the plow mount.

The front support for the plow mounting plate is a piece of 2x2 tubing bolted to the bumper brackets.

    The plow all mounted up.

Short video of the hydraulics in action.

I didn't paint any of it yet because I'll be adding some brush guards and maybe a 2" receiver later.

Maybe we'll get some snow this year so I can see how it works. Never snowed more than 2" at a time last winter.

I just put the plow on for the first time since last year. They're predicting 6" or more snow for tonight. I might finally find out if this thing is going to work.

We only ended up with maybe 3" of snow. It hard to tell with a 30mph wind blowing it around. I did use the plow to cut some of the drifts and it worked well. Drifting snow is the main problem with my driveway. In the past I've had to cut drifts 3 or 4 times a day just to keep it from getting so deep I have to get the Bobcat out to open it up.
I can tell I going to need to put a bigger battery in the truck. The winch wants to drain the little lawn mower battery in it pretty quick. Oh well building a larger battery box was on the to do list already.

    Nice work.
Unfortunately here where I live in Japan (60 kms northeast of Tokyo at the Pacific Ocean side) we do not have much snow.
In the Northern Provinces and on Hokkaido Island next to Siberia I have seen Honda Acty Trucks with plow a lot.

Getting involved in some of our bigger snowstorms a few times might have you rethinking how unfortunate you are !

Well we got another 8" of wet snow last night and it cut right thru it great. This time there isn't any wind making drifts. I sure don't miss the days of sitting out in the open on a tractor seat.

Glad to hear all the work was well worth it. I know what you mean about the cab, just upgraded my Johnny with a cab and sure makes snowblowing more pleasurable !
Back blade is sure nice too. I wonder if you could make one for your Honda ? Once you have one it's hard to go back.

Part of my driveway, It goes on in this direction for 500 yards after the top of the hill.

Things were a little covered in snow today.

After seeing these pics of your driveway, I understand that you need such equipment.
I just live next to a normal road,no hills here, so actually no need to get a plow.
I just have some snow chains for the tires, in case I need them ... but never used so far.

Nice job! Yeah, we had around 16" of very wet snow about a week ago (kids got 2 snow days out of it!) that put my little set up to the test. I spent a total of 5 hours on the 1/4 mile drive. Worked fine but I still had to pull out the tractor to use the front end loader to move things around the next day. Being in a heated cab sure beats being out in wind and cold.

Jester3775, that JD2720 is my dream tractor! Just a touch bigger than my current 4100 but not too big to get around in the woods. Oh, and is that a chicken coop I see in the background of the first pictures? ;)

Acerguy, you got good eyes and you are right on with the chicken coop. (One of my Honda's are hiding in those pics. too) I have a little dog door set up and they can go outside into a fenced in kennel as well.
Thanks for the comments on my 2720, but your 4100 is no slouch either ! I do really like it. The size & hp (31.4) are what sold me on that model.
Here is a set of forks I rigged up:

Just an update on how things have been working.

We've had about 16" of snow in last 2 weeks with freezing rain in between snow storms. Everything has been working good with the only change I've made is changing the steel winch cable to a short synthetic one. I still haven't got around to putting in a bigger battery.

Hahaha nice!! I just got done building my plow and front bumper/plow mount/front skid plate.....94 inch plow......then all we had was weeks of freezing rain.....one snow with about 4 inches....more freezing rain and finally.......the snow came!!! 16 inches in two days. Was busy after that hahaha. Worked great!!! I have an interstate group 27 1000cca battery mounted in a marine battery box, plastic with lid....20 dollars.....mounted it in the bed behind the cab. Extended the battery leads by sticking the new wire in the stock battery clamps, ran the largest bolt that would fit threw with washers on both sides and plasti dipped it all. That stuff ya dip tools in to rubberize the handles. Has worked flawlessly for a year now and I have never had an issue with starting or running out of power. Lights on, stereo blaring with 4 large speakers, heater on high and running the plow. I'm hoping to figure out a system to rotate my plow from inside next hahaha

I only really need the extra battery power when I have the plow on so I've been thinking about putting a extra battery in a marine box and then wiring a plug like they use for fork lift batteries into the system. That way I'll just put the box in the bed and plug it in as needed. I already use these type connectors on my full size Dodge Ram to plug the winch or jumper cables in.

Thats an excelent idea. The battery I have has both top post and side post terminals. So I took a bit of wire and put those same connectors on and bolted the jumper wire to the side terminal. I have a piwer inverter that I wired with the same connection as well as a few other things. Works great. Just plug n play!!! I need the extra juice cause it gets so cold hahaha if you dont have anything in the tool box under the bed, that would be the perfect place to hide the extra battery

No toolbox under the bed on mine, but I was just looking at it and a size 75 side post battery fits perfect under the passenger seat. I just got off the phone with the auto parts store and ordered all the stuff I need to put a battery tray with hold downs there. I have an extra battery just sitting here from a car a teenager totaled. View attachment 12987

    Hey moose,
What you want is a "linear actuator". [PUSH-PULL screw-jack]
A "1500lb" unit will stand up to the punishment that you are looking to deliver for the application.
Two mounting points and that's all. 12 VDC reversible geared drive and clutching system. [about 15lbs installed]
Pretty simple, pretty beefy, but damned expensive.

A couple years back, when I was buying components just for fun, and experimentation, I got three of the "best" ones on the market. Each, the 12" throw models, over a 12 month period, and $500 bucks each.:p

Now that my sabbatical is over, I'm in the same situation. I have a build budget again, but not enough time to blow my nose.

Here's a concept link. I'd have to go out to the shop to get you a manufacturer and part # for the "best on the market", but I'm sure you could figure it out if all you want is P&P...

Right on!! That battery should be all you will ever need. I run a 500 watt power inverter in the summer as well as a 1000 watt. They power everything from a diesel heater to a compressor for air tools. Im working on trying to find some electric levelers off a motorhome that I can mount under the truck. That way I can use them for built in jacks hahaha

I have been lookin for those. I found that WARN makes one for about 250. Not sure of the quality or how fast they move. My other thought was to get my hands on hydrolic trim tabs off a boat. Use both rams but have one push while the other pulls. I know they are strong enough. Just have to see how much I can get a complete set up for.

Thanx man!! Im still trying to figure out a way to talk ya out of a sc set up for my mini-mog!!! Hahaha

Had to just a little plowing yesterday.

Last two days it's been below 0F and the truck started just fine with the bigger battery.

Just a update. Everything has been working great. We had 8" of heavy wet snow a couple of days ago and it plowed right thru it. The only change for this year are the 3/8" bolts got upgraded to 1/2" after I hit a large rock that didn't move and sheared them off.

Wish we could such mods here and the car would be still street legal. Here in Japan we have to go to the socalled Shaken test = roadworthy test every 2 years to get a new sticker in the windshield and to pay the tax.
Besides emission test they check tires, front windshields for cracks, all the rubber parts of steering links, brake test, hand brake test, oil leaks under car, shock tests, wiper washer system must work, wipers must work, headlights must be correct adjusted and all lights are checked. In case the car has electric windows, also these must work, they check it. Exhaust is tested for leaks/corrosion

It is really very nice experiment on your part. It will certainly help you in your need as it's strong grip will certainly help you.
